As the Cleveland Cavaliers prepare for their matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies, questions remain about who will be in the starting lineup. The team is off to a strong start, riding a two-game winning streak as it looks to carry momentum toward the end of the season. However, there is some uncertainty, as star guard James Harden is expected to miss the game due to a personal matter. (h/t Tom Withers of AP News).

Cleveland is coming off a 117-108 win over the Indiana Pacers, highlighted by standout performances from Donovan Mitchell and Harden. Mitchell led the way with 38 points, six rebounds, and six assists, shooting 16-of-27 from the field. Harden added 28 points, four rebounds, and seven assists, shooting 8-of-17, playing a key role in the victory.

Without Harden and with several role players also sidelined, the Cavaliers could struggle offensively without one of their primary scorers and playmakers. They will likely lean more on their frontcourt, with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen expected to control the glass and generate points in the paint.

Since being acquired in the offseason, Harden has been a strong addition for Cleveland. Across 24 games, the 36-year-old is averaging 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 7.9 assists while shooting 48.1% from the field and 44.0% from three-point range.

Harden is known for his elite shot creation, including his signature step-back jumper and ability to draw fouls. He also brings high-level playmaking, excelling in pick-and-roll situations. His strength, rhythm, and durability have defined his consistent, high-level production throughout his career.

Harden has developed into a premier guard since being selected third overall in the 2009 NBA Draft. A three-time scoring champion, 11-time All-Star, two-time assists leader, eight-time All-NBA selection, NBA 75th Anniversary Team honoree, and 2017-18 MVP, he has consistently been one of the league’s most productive players.

He is currently under contract with the LA Clippers on a reported two-year, $81.5 million deal signed in July 2025, which includes a partially guaranteed player option for the 2026-27 season.

However, Harden’s recent career has been defined by movement rather than long-term stability. After multiple team changes in recent years, questions remain about his fit and longevity with any single franchise.

Teams may hesitate to commit long-term, instead evaluating their performance year by year. His talent remains undeniable, but his future appears increasingly tied to short-term opportunities rather than lasting tenure.
