The Sacramento Kings may retain head coach Doug Christie beyond the 2025–26 season despite a disappointing campaign, with internal evaluations reportedly factoring in the team’s injury struggles.

Sacramento enters the final stretch of the season with a 21–59 record, sitting 14th in the Western Conference standings. The team’s performance has raised questions about the organization’s direction, but recent reporting suggests Christie’s future may not be tied solely to the win-loss column.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, there are scenarios under consideration in which Christie returns as head coach next season.

“In nearby Sacramento, meanwhile, I’m told that there are scenarios under consideration in which Christie would be back next season to coach the Kings despite their 21-58 struggles.”

Fischer also noted that Christie’s contract status could play a role in the decision-making process. The 54-year-old coach has one guaranteed year remaining on his deal for the 2026–27 season, followed by a team option for 2027–28.

“He has one guaranteed season left on his contract for 2026-27, sources say, before a team option in 2027-28.”

Injuries complicate evaluation as Kings weigh Doug Christie’s future

Beyond contractual considerations, Sacramento’s injury issues throughout the season have complicated evaluations of Christie’s performance. The Kings have dealt with multiple key absences, limiting lineup consistency and impacting overall results.

“And I’ve heard that the Kings are still evaluating Christie’s future based on the premise that Sacramento’s various injury woes have made it difficult to gauge his true capability in the role.”

Christie, a former Kings player, took over the role amid organizational changes and has overseen a roster that has struggled to maintain continuity. While the record reflects a challenging season, the front office appears to be weighing broader circumstances before making a final determination.

A decision on Christie’s future is expected in the offseason as Sacramento evaluates its next steps.
