Former LSU point guard Dedan Thomas is transferring to Houston, he announced on social media on Saturday.
The 6-foot-1 junior from averaged 15.3 points, a team-leading 6.5 assists and 1.6 turnovers per game before having season-ending foot surgery in February.
Houston finished with a 30-7 record under coach Kelvin Sampson and reached the Sweet 16 last season in the NCAA Tournament.
Thomas is the third player from LSU’s team last year to decide where he will play next season. The others are Mike Nwoko, who is heading to Xavier, and Marcus Vaughns, who is going to Arizona State. Thomas was the first player to intend on entering the transfer portal on March 25. This was the day before coach Will Wade was announced as the new coach of the program, replacing Matt McMahon.
The Las Vegas native said part of why he committed to the Tigers last year was because he wanted to play for McMahon, who had coached NBA point guard Ja Morant at Murray State.
Thomas injured his left foot on Jan. 2, the day before the Southeastern Conference opener. He reaggravated the injury on Jan. 28 in a 14-point home loss to Mississippi State. He started his college career at UNLV, starting all 60 games he played over two years. He averaged 14.5 points on 43.2% shooting, 4.9 assists and 2.1 turnovers in that period.
Thomas was joined in the portal by seven other LSU players: Nwoko, Jalen Reed, Robert Miller, Ron Zipper, Mazi Mosley, Matt Gilhool and Vaughns.
Nwoko, the 6-foot-10, 261-pound starting center, played one year at LSU, averaging 13.4 points on 61% shooting overall and 5.9 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game
Reed, who was expected to be LSU’s second-best player, suffered a season-ending left Achilles tendon injury in the sixth game of this season. The redshirt junior averaged 11 points on 60.6% shooting and 6.0 rebounds in the first five games.
Miller led the team in blocks (1.4) and averaged 6.1 points on 65.7% field-goal percentage. The 6-5 Zipper only appeared in nine games in his only season at LSU, playing a total of 33 minutes. Mosley played 19 games and averaged 1.8 points in 6.4 minutes. Gilhool and Vaughns didn’t appear in any game action this season.
LSU, which finished last season 15-17 overall and 3-15 in the SEC, hasn’t made any portal additions thus far.
