The Washington Wizards will retain head coach Brian Keefe for the 2026-27 season, giving him the opportunity to lead a roster headlined by Anthony Davis and Trae Young after enduring multiple rebuilding years.

Washington finished the 2025-26 campaign with a 17-65 record, the worst mark in the NBA, as the organization prioritized long-term development, draft positioning and maintaining a protected first-round pick. Despite the results, team leadership has remained committed to Keefe’s role in guiding the franchise through its early rebuilding stages.

According to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins, the Wizards’ front office believes Keefe now deserves the chance to coach a more competitive roster as expectations shift toward winning.

“For two-plus years, Brian Keefe has coached the Washington Wizards through the early stages of a difficult rebuilding process in which team officials prioritized keeping a protected first-round pick, maximizing their draft lottery odds and developing a large number of young players,” Robbins reported.

“Now, Keefe will have the opportunity to show what he can do when the franchise places a much higher emphasis on winning games.”

Robbins added that Washington expects Davis and Young to lead a young core that includes Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George and the team’s upcoming lottery selection in June’s draft.

ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel also reported that Keefe’s job status has remained stable despite the team’s struggles, citing internal support from both players and management.

“Another coach in a rebuilding situation with his current organization is Brian Keefe with the Washington Wizards,” Siegel wrote. “The last two seasons have been grueling for Keefe and this organization, as they continue to navigate their rebuild with patience and precision.”

“Sources say the Wizards’ leadership has been working with Keefe all season, and there is no reason at this very moment to believe that his job is in jeopardy.”

With Davis anchoring the defense and Young providing offensive creation, the Wizards are expected to transition from a rebuilding phase into a more competitive stage next season, placing increased focus on results after two years centered on development.
