The Golden State Warriors and the NBA world await Steve Kerr’s decision, as his future as the club’s head coach is uncertain after the 111-96 Play-In Tournament loss to the Phoenix Suns. If Kerr were to leave coaching, he would very likely have a job in media, and it sounds like he’s at least taking the steps necessary for that possibility to eventually come true.
Reports indicate that Kerr, who is 60 years old, has been meeting with media agents, according to Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports. If and when the nine-time NBA champion (five as a player, four as a coach) decides to stop coaching, it appears a job in broadcasting is at least one strong option for his next career endeavor.
“While Kerr, 60, has not yet decided on a future path, sources told Front Office Sports he has been meeting with media agents,” reported Glasspiegel. “One source said these meetings have happened over the past several years and were focused on larger projects. A spokesperson for his coaching agency, Priority Sports, declined to comment.”
Before accepting the Warriors’ head coaching job in 2014, Kerr worked with TNT as a color commentator. Although there is the possibility he returns to coach Golden State again next season, ESPN, NBC, and Amazon, which are all of the NBA’s rights partners, would likely be interested in potentially signing Kerr as a commentator.
With Steve Kerr’s contract with the Warriors set to expire by the end of April, a decision should be coming relatively soon. The 2015-16 Head Coach of the Year has plenty of options on the table for whatever he wants to do. He could return as the Warriors coach, go back to broadcasting, possibly take a shot at working in an NBA front office again (general manager of the Phoenix Suns from 2004 to 2010), or simply retire altogether.
