During the height of the Miami Heat’s “Big 3” era, Indiana Pacers president Larry Bird was among the NBA team executives trying to dismantle LeBron James and the South Beach powerhouse. However, Bird knew it was easier said than done, as the disparity between a small-market franchise like Indy and a destination city like Miami was very evident.

Bird acknowledged that while the Heat could leverage the star power and free agent allure of James, the Pacers, on the other hand, were forced to build through draft picks and strategic trades. Apart from LeBron, Indiana’s lack of financial flexibility was also a factor.

Despite the huge talent gap between the Heat and the rest of the NBA, Larry Legend believed in the league’s cyclical nature. Sooner or later, Bird was certain that James and his Heat would eventually fall.

“First of all, they’ve got the best player in the world,” Bird told CBS Sports at the time. “But they’re a tax team. They’ll spend a little bit more to get the players they want and they’ve got players that want to go there and play — pretty good players for a lot less money. That makes it tough, but that’s just part of the game.”

“I’ve always said, the favorite is going to be the team that has the best player…. They deserve to be No. 1 until somebody takes ’em off that spot,” he added.

Bird figured out LeBron and the Heat’s weakness

Aside from assessing how the Heat recruit players, Bird also studied Miami on the court. He closely watched how the Big 3 operated the moment they made their highly anticipated debut as a unit.

By doing so, Larry Legend eventually discovered the hole in the Heat’s playbook when he tuned in on the 2011 Finals. After watching the Heat struggle to outmatch the Dallas Mavericks, Bird reckoned that the upset loss was the result of the heavy reliance on James.

“I think he’s as good as anyone that’s ever played this game,” Bird once said of LBJ in a separate discussion. “I think he’s going to win a lot of titles. I think he’s going to continue to get better. To me, he’s an amazing athlete. He’s never been hurt. He’s got the body of a football player, and he’s got skill. I just think he’s off-the-charts good. And I think his time is going to come.”

“I think team basketball always beats individuals if you stay together,” added Larry. “You’re never going to have the perfect games. But when it comes down to the end of the games, ball movement always beats individuals going one-on-one.”

Bird’s Pacers gave LeBron and the Heat a run for their money

Bird’s hard work eventually paid off. The Pacers became the Heat’s most consistent and grueling obstacle. Indy pushed Miami to their limit in back-to-back conference finals showdowns.

Unfortunately for the Pacers, they ended up succumbing to the dominance of the Heat’s Big 3. However, Bird’s prediction regarding the Heat’s vulnerability proved prophetic.

After the San Antonio Spurs took the Heat to a championship basketball clinic in their Finals rematch in 2014, the Heat dynasty collapsed. James decided to make an epic return to Cleveland, essentially ending the Big 3 era in South Beach.
