The head coach of the Aliquippa boys’ basketball team, who was ousted last week, will have to wait until next week’s board meeting to find out if he will keep his job at the district.“I’m not doing what I love to do. It is a little bit in limbo, but hey, it’s a process,” said Nick Lackovich after an emergency Aliquippa School Board meeting on Monday, where his employment status ended up back on the table. The coach said he was holding an open gym on May 21 when the board voted against reappointing him for the 2025-26 school year. “I was like, I’m shocked. I mean, I never thought that would happen,” Lackovich said. Fellow coaches, community members, and former players spoke up in support of Lackovich at the June 2 meeting. “I think Coach Lackovich has shown success not only on the court, but throughout the community,” said Matt Mottes, the head football coach at Hopewell. Branden Carter played for Lackovich in the past and credited the coach for building up his confidence. “He’s blunt, he’s straight up. If you can’t handle that, you probably shouldn’t play for him. That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be the coach,” Carter said. While most public speakers sided with Lackovich, he did have a few critics. “I’ve been around a long time. There’s never been as many meetings about this guy as Nick,” said Mark Walker. Following a lengthy executive session, the board reconvened and voted to renew Lackovich’s schedule 4-3, with one member abstaining and another walking out. Because of this, the board said the decision will be voted on again at next week’s meeting. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 asked board members for an interview, but they said they couldn’t comment. “It’s been very emotional, and hopefully we’ll get a favorable outcome at some point,” Lackovich said. The coach said he plans to be at the meeting.
