Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius Erving is one of the best players to ever play for the organization since its inception in 1946 when the team was first known as the Syracuse Nationals. Erving spent the final 11 of his 16 professional basketball season as a member of the 76ers and as a result, he’s getting his just due from one of the greatest players in NBA history.
“Hi, I’m Shaquille O’Neal and this is my top-10 greatest players of all-time. Number 10, I have myself [before video cuts for another take]. I will take myself off and put the great Julius Erving,” NBA Hall-of-Famer Shaquille O’Neal said in a video posted on Netflix’s account on X. O’Neal, who is doing a new documentary with the streaming media company called “Power Moves,” has had some hot takes over the years following his 19-year NBA career.

Erving, affectionately known by the NBA community as “Dr. J,” is one of the early stars of the NBA that helped bring the league into prominence prior to the arrival of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Erving accomplished a multitude of feats including, but not limited to: leading the 76ers to an NBA title in 1983, winning the NBA’s MVP award in 1981, and being an 11-time NBA All-Star.
Erving ended his NBA career following the conclusion of the 1986-87 season and once he retired, he walked away from the game having averaged 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 50.7% from the field and 77.7% from the free-throw line. Erving was arguably a better player during his five years in the ABA as he boasted averages of 28.7 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.4 steals, and 2.0 blocks per contest on 50.4% shooting from the floor and 32.2% from deep.
Erving is one of 10 players to have their jersey retired by Philadelphia along with being one of five players to have won an MVP award while playing for the franchise. Erving is fourth in franchise history in total points scored (18,364), minutes played (28,677), and assists (3,224) along with being the franchise leader in blocks despite playing the shooting guard or small forward spots throughout his career.
