Former point guard DJ Augustin is joining the Rockets in a front-office capacity, The Athletic’s Kelly Iko reported Thursday. Houston’s front office is led by general manager Rafael Stone, who has been in that position since late 2020.
Now 37 years old, Augustin is a veteran of 14 NBA seasons as a player, during which he averaged 9.5 points (38.1% on 3-pointers) and 3.9 assists in 23.4 minutes per game.
Earlier this decade, Augustin played for Stone and the Rockets at the onset of a rebuilding movement during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons (56 combined games).
A New Orleans native, Augustin was a high-school basketball player in nearby Missouri City, Texas, before playing in college at the University of Texas. He was then drafted by Charlotte at No. 9 overall in the 2008 first round.
Augustin played at Texas alongside superstar forward Kevin Durant, who reportedly could be a trade target for the Rockets in the 2025 offseason.
The exact nature of Augustin’s role and responsibilities within Houston’s front office has yet to be reported.
