Dallas Mavericks reportedly have Los Angeles Lakers reason for delaying Klay Thompson buyout

Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks looked set to move on from one another, but there seems to be a specific reason he hasn’t been bought out just yet.

Klay Thompson signed with the Dallas Mavericks ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season. Looking to make the difference alongside Luka Doncic, the 4-time champion was likely blindsided by the Luka trade.

One half of the Splash Brothers, Thompson has had to play through two seasons in which the Mavs have not really competed. So it was no surprise when rumours surfaced suggesting that he is looking to leave.

While a buyout is reportedly on the table, there have been some delays. And for those who have been wondering, a recent report has revealed the reason behind Dallas’ hesitation.

The 36-year-old is a shadow of the player he used to be during the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty years. Despite his decline, he continues to be a 40 percent shooter from three-point range.

That means Klay is still quite valuable to some teams. The Lakers, who now have Luka, are one such team. The Miami Heat, who just acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo, are another. Therein lies the issue.

“The Mavericks have been hesitant to buy out Klay Thompson due to the strong interest from the Lakers and Heat,” Jake Fischer reported for Bleacher Report.

While teams never want to keep stars who aren’t happy to be there, it’s equally foolish to give up assets to rivals for cheap. And after their recent history with the Lakers, Masai Ujiri might not want them to benefit either.
