The Utah Jazz added to their coaching staff a name very familiar to Milwaukee basketball fans.
Head coach Will Hardy announced June 6 that Steve Wojciechowski, who led the Marquette men’s basketball team from 2014-2021, has been added to his staff as an assistant.
Wojciechowski earned the promotion after coaching the Jazz’s G League affiliate for the past two seasons. The Salt Lake Stars went 41-17 in that stretch and earned the team’s only playoff victory last season.
Wojciechowski was fired by MU in March 2021 after a 128-95 record in seven seasons. He never led the Golden Eagles to any postseason success, going 0-2 in the NCAA Tournament and 4-6 in the Big East tournament.
He spent two years out of coaching after moving with his family to Utah, his wife’s home state. Wojciechowski hung around the Jazz in an unofficial role when Quin Snyder was the coach. Snyder helped recruit Wojciechowski to Duke as a player.
Hardy replaced Snyder as coach in June 2022, and Wojciechowski still hung out in meetings and practices. A year later, Wojciechowski was hired by the Stars.
Before the Jazz lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in November at Fiserv Forum, Hardy was asked by the Journal Sentinel about the job that Wojciechowski was doing in the G League. Hardy was effusive in his praise.
“No. 1, he is an incredible teacher,” Hardy said. “He’s done an amazing job with all of our young players.
“I obviously work really closely with him. Our team is young so there are players going back and forth (to the G League) and spending a lot of time with him.”
Wojciechowski is the second Stars head coach to be promoted to the Jazz’s staff after his predecessor Scott Morrison.
“(Wojciechowski) is one of the most competitive people that I’ve ever been around,” Hardy said. “I think that tenacity that he instills in guys every day is really helpful.
“We talk about development in a technical sense a lot with what skills we’re going to try to improve in a player, what technique things we’re going to try to improve in a player. But there is a mindset that it takes to be a good NBA player.
“The season is relentless, it’s 82 games and it keeps coming at you. There are nights where it can feel really bad and I think that Wojo’s overall competitive spirit and his toughness is something that I want our young players to be around.”
