The Atlanta Hawks are officially entering the dating game.
Forget swiping through profiles from the couch. The Hawks want single basketball fans to put on a decent outfit, leave the house and see if a January matchup against the Indiana Pacers can produce something more memorable than points in the standings.
Atlanta will host a “Single AF Night” when the Pacers visit State Farm Arena on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2027. According to Front Office Sports, the promotion is designed to bring single fans together “while experiencing the excitement of Hawks basketball.”
It is basketball, matchmaking and potentially awkward small talk rolled into one ticket. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET, giving fans plenty of time to determine whether they have found a connection or simply someone willing to split the cost of arena nachos.
Hawks give NBA fans a new way to meet
Professional sports teams have held countless theme nights through the years, but the Hawks may have found one that comes with endless possibilities.
A great first impression could arrive during warmups. A disagreement over a foul call could reveal major compatibility issues before halftime. If someone leaves early during a close fourth quarter, that might be an immediate red flag.
The possibilities for the arena’s game-night staff are even better. The kiss cam suddenly becomes a high-risk proposition. Seat upgrades could double as romantic gestures. Even the familiar request to “make some noise” might take on an entirely different meaning if two fans have spent three quarters trying to work up the courage to speak to each other.
The Hawks have not yet disclosed every activity or special feature planned for the event. Still, the name alone guarantees that Jan. 7 will not feel like an ordinary regular-season game.
There is also something refreshingly direct about the promotion. The Hawks did not call it “Singles Social Night” or give it a safe corporate title. They went with “Single AF Night,” making the intended audience nearly impossible to misunderstand.
If nothing else, Atlanta deserves credit for knowing how to market the occasion.

Pacers game could become Atlanta’s biggest first date
The Hawks are scheduled to face the Pacers at State Farm Arena, but the basketball may have unusual competition for the crowd’s attention.
Every trip to the concession stand could become a meet-cute. Every timeout could offer another opportunity to introduce yourself. Even the person sitting in the wrong seat might suddenly look less like an inconvenience and more like fate.
Of course, the evening could also provide important lessons about dating at a sporting event. Never begin a conversation by criticizing someone’s jersey. Do not disappear because the concession line was long. Most importantly, if the other person appears on the kiss cam with somebody else, accept the loss and begin preparing for the next game.
The Hawks cannot promise that fans will meet the love of their lives. They cannot even promise that every conversation will make it beyond the final buzzer. They can, however, provide basketball, a building full of people with at least one shared interest and a much better opening line than anything available on a dating app.
“Come here often?” may not work.
“Did the Hawks really organize a night for thousands of single people?” probably will.
Atlanta’s promotion is funny, slightly chaotic and surprisingly sensible. Sports already bring strangers together. On Jan. 7, the Hawks are simply being more intentional about it.
And if a couple eventually gets married after meeting at “Single AF Night,” Atlanta should immediately demand the right to host the wedding at center court.
