BOCA RATON — Amid ongoing negotiations to conclude a deal to bring Miami Heat broadcasts to the Palm Beach market, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s initial steps with his new team will come out of view in South Florida beyond Miami-Dade/Broward.
While an agreement with WPLG-Local 10 has been in place for months to have Heat telecasts available in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, the Heat’s first preseason game with the team’s revised roster — Saturday’s 7 p.m. exhibition against the Toronto Raptors in Quebec City — is not scheduled for airing in the Palm Beach market.
All of the Heat’s locally available regular-season games on WPLG-Local 10 will be available on over-the-air television in the Palm Beach market, according to the Heat.
The expectation is that Heat telecasts in the Palm Beach market will begin with the Oct. 14 exhibition against Brooklyn Nets at Kaseya Center.
In addition to airing on Local 10, Saturday’s exhibition against the Raptors also is airing on NBA TV, although local blackout rules typically keep such NBA TV broadcasts from airing in home markets of teams.
The Heat, like many NBA teams, have had to adjust their local telecast distribution due to the folding of FanDuel Sports’ regional networks at the end of last season.
The Florida Panthers made a similar transition to local over-the-air broadcasts last year, with agreement in place with all South Florida markets. The Miami Marlins have utilized a streaming/cable approach with their telecasts amid the folding of FanDuel’s regional networks.
In addition to the announcement of a Palm Beach affiliate, the Heat also are expected to announce in coming days an agreement for telecasts in the Fort Myers market.
Local 10’s debut in-house broadcast is scheduled to feature both pregame and postgame shows on Saturday, with broadcasters Eric Reid, John Crotty, Amy Audibert and Jason Jackson returning. Local 10 last year broadcast selected FanDuel-produced Heat games, to this year include an increased presence by Local 10 Sports Director Will Manso.
While some South Florida cable and satellite providers dropped WPLG from their carriage after the station’s departure from ABC affiliation, a free app is available to stream the station’s broadcast schedule in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, including the Heat telecasts in South Florida.
According to a report in the Sports Business Journal, “the NBA is urging teams to sign one-year deals or packages with at least a one-year exit clause, in the event the league does not launch a national streaming platform until the 2027-28 season.”
Such an agreement is in place with Local 10.
Excluded from the Local 10 package will be any Heat broadcasts deemed by the NBA as solely national broadcasts on ABC, NBC, Prime, ESPN or Peacock.
All postseason games are nationally broadcast only, as are select NBA Cup games.
The Heat open the franchise’s 39th regular season on Oct. 21 against the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves, in a game solely to be televised by ESPN.
The Heat conclude their training camp at Florida Atlantic University on Friday, before flying to Canada later in the day in advance of the first of their five preseason games.
