The Golden State Warriors aren’t far from being seen as legitimate contenders in the Western Conference. However, it’s clear that Mike Dunleavy Jr. must find a way to improve the current big man rotation. Golden State has been short on size in the middle of the floor for multiple years.
During a recent interview with D.J. Siddiqi of Basketball Insiders, former Warriors point guard Baron Davis admitted that Golden State needs to add some athleticism to the frontcourt. Davis also pointed towards the team’s rebounding as another area that needs improvement. Of course, size and rebounding usually go hand-in-hand.
“Their ceiling is really kind of the move that they make in the offseason to upgrade themselves athletically right in the front court,” says Davis. “I personally think they need some front-court athleticism to compete in the West with Nikola Jokic, Naz Reid and people like that…They needed some help, I would definitely say, rebounding. Steve Kerr said it himself. Draymond Green at the five the majority of the season kind of wore him out. I saw similar things. If they can get some support, that would really help.”

The Warriors will likely look to make some adjustments to the current roster this summer. If the front office can locate and acquire a starting-caliber center, Golden State could make some serious noise next season. Given the aging core of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler, Steve Kerr can’t expect his team to rely on speed and finesse to gloss their lack of rim-protection and rebounding moving forward. Furthermore, the West is full of teams with talented and dominant big men.
As such, it will be interesting to see how the Warriors address one of the bigger needs on the roster, and how a genuinely athletic center could help transform the team’s fortunes moving forward.
