As the Philadelphia 76ers prepare for the 2025 NBA draft and weigh all options with the No. 3 pick, there are plenty of avenues they can go down to improve the roster. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey is never one to shy away from making a deal that he feels will help the roster going forward.
The Sixers will have a number of players to look at in order to add a good, young player to the roster, and one of those options is Texas product Tre Johnson.
Johnson averaged 19.9 points for the Longhorns as a freshman in the tough SEC. He shot 39.7% from deep and played 34.7 minutes per night while being the guy for Texas on a regular basis. ESPN has NBA comparisons for the lottery picks and they compared Johnson to former All-Star guard Michael Redd on the high end and Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas on the low end who are both legitimate NBA scorers. Redd was an All-Star in 2004 and Thomas is a threat to score 40 every night.

Johnson is a fairly simple prospect to understand. He’s likely going to shoot it well; he’s probably going to shoot a lot; and whatever else he ends up giving his future team will be gravy, not necessarily baked into their expectations.
Johnson’s clean and compact stroke will make him a threat from long range, and he has flashed ability to get to it off the dribble, with a level of fearlessness required to succeed as a volume scorer but also one that can get him into trouble with shot selection at times. His efficiency inside the paint and finishing will have to improve, too.
One has to wonder what the Sixers are thinking. Nobody seems to know–which is a good thing, by the way–as Philadelphia seems to be holding all the cards for June 25. At this point, the Sixers just need to continue doing their due diligence on the prospects and trust that Morey and his staff will make the right decision.
