The Orlando Magic have gone all-in and entered win-now mode following their blockbuster trade with the Memphis Grizzlies.<\/p>\n

In exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope<\/a>, Cole Anthony, and potentially five first-round draft picks, the Orlando Magic acquired Desmond Bane<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s safe to say that the trade took many by surprise, but the signs were already there. For instance, the Memphis Grizzlies GM\u2019s end-of-season comments<\/a> hinted at this move.<\/p>\n

But coming to the Magic\u2019s reasoning behind making the move, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas<\/a> blatantly labeled the trade \u2018dumb.\u2019<\/p>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, Bane is coming off a season averaging 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game for the Grizzlies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On paper, it makes sense to add a talented scorer like him to the roster, but Arenas is simply not convinced by the price that the Magic<\/a> paid to trade for Bane.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not fleeced, they\u2019re just dumb. It\u2019s literally the Orlando Magic<\/a>. There are some teams out there that don\u2019t care about their future. Dynasties [are] built off decisions like this,\u201d Arenas said on Gil\u2019s Arena.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe trade is fine, it\u2019s the picks, unprotected, you got to have at least top three. If you get to the number one or two picks because something happens to your team, you just lose it.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they don\u2019t really care about building right now. Win now, but they [are] not good enough to win now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Did the Orlando Magic overpay for Desmond Bane?<\/p>\n

The Magic finished as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference<\/a> with a 41-41 record in the 2024-25 NBA season. Coming into the playoffs, they were sent home in five games by the Boston Celtics<\/a> in the opening round.<\/p>\n

But the thing is that the East is likely to be wide open next season, with Jayson Tatum likely missing major time <\/a>due to his injury and the Celtics reportedly looking to blow up their core<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The likes of the Philadelphia 76ers<\/a>, Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a>, and New York Knicks<\/a> remain as inconsistent as ever. If all goes well, the Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> and Indiana Pacers<\/a> could prove to be an obstacle in the Magic\u2019s path to reaching the NBA Finals.<\/p>\n

So, making a win-now mode trade was indeed the correct choice to make. However, was giving up four unprotected draft picks a wise decision?<\/p>\n

The Magic have the likes of Paolo Banchero<\/a>, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs, who are all yet to hit the prime of their careers. <\/p>\n

Now, adding a talented star who can drop 20 points on any given night will likely make the franchise a championship contender for the majority of the next decade.<\/p>\n

Eventually, that would mean that the Magic would stay out of the lottery and the picks that they gave up would likely land somewhere between the 20th to 30th spot in the NBA Draft.
