{"id":107556,"date":"2025-06-18T16:04:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T16:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/107556\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T16:04:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T16:04:10","slug":"why-marina-mabrey-wasnt-ejected-for-caitlin-clark-shove-in-contentious-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/107556\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Marina Mabrey wasn&#8217;t ejected for Caitlin Clark shove in contentious scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was fight night in Indianapolis on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Except it came during a WNBA game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever faced off  Tuesday night and the first half was mainly normal, as the teams competed in a close game.<\/p>\n<p>But when the second half arrived, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/17\/sports\/caitlin-clark-knocked-to-ground-in-technical-filled-shoving-match\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that all changed in a heartbeat<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through the third quarter, as Fever Caitlin Clark had possession of the ball, she was poked in the eye by Jacy Sheldon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marina Mabrey bumps Caitlin Clark. AP<\/p>\n<p>Both Clark and Sheldon exchanged words after the foul and it <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/17\/sports\/dave-portnoy-goes-scorched-earth-after-caitlin-clark-scuffle\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quickly became heated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As Suns center Tina Charles tried to mediate the situation, Marina Mabrey ran in and shoved Clark to the ground.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Caitlin Clark after being pushed to the ground by Marina Mabrey.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>When the dust settled, Sheldon received a flagrant one foul and Mabrey, Clark, and Charles all were given technical fouls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It surprised many that Mabrey was not ejected from the game, but crew chief Ashley Gloss told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/basketball\/wnba\/fever\/2025\/06\/17\/wnba-refs-explain-why-marina-mabrey-wasnt-ejected-for-knocking-caitlin-clark-down-fever-vs-sun\/84253428007\/?taid=68523e7286eaf50001e0d3b4&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Indianapolis Star<\/a> that the actions didn\u2019t warrant her being ousted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe contact made by Mabrey did not rise to the level of an ejection,\u201d Gloss said, \u201cAdditionally, [it] did not meet the criteria for a flagrant foul penalty two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that fight was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/18\/sports\/fever-game-ends-in-absolute-chaos-after-caitlin-clark-is-knocked-down-as-furious-blame-game-erupts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not the last of the night<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Caitlin Clark moments after getting fouled by Jacy Sheldon. Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>With just 47 seconds remaining in the Fever\u2019s 88-71 win, Sheldon drove toward the hoop for a layup.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana\u2019s Sophie Cunningham then came from behind and yanked her hair and pulled Sheldon to the ground.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sophie Cunningham and Jacy Sheldon in the second scuffle of the night. Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Another scuffle ensued, leading to three ejections.<\/p>\n<p>Cunningham was ejected and received a flagrant 2 foul for pulling Sheldon\u2019s hair, while Sheldon and the Sun\u2019s Lindsay Allen were also booted for fighting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Fever\u2019s win and Clark\u2019s 20-point outing were ultimately overshadowed by the fights that occurred.<\/p>\n<p>WNBA referees have received criticism for the feistiness allowed during games, which continued Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Marina Mabrey during Tuesday\u2019s game.
