{"id":120609,"date":"2025-06-24T09:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T09:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/120609\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T09:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T09:28:08","slug":"thunders-17th-chapter-is-best-one-yet-as-okc-beats-pacers-for-first-nba-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/120609\/","title":{"rendered":"Thunder&#8217;s 17th chapter is best one yet as OKC beats Pacers for first NBA title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/06\/05\/2025-nba-finals-sam-presti-okc-thunder-rebuild-shai-gilgeous-alexander\/84035100007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Presti<\/a> sees every season as a chapter in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/05\/28\/commemorate-okc-thunder-historic-season-with-our-collectors-book\/83893354007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thunder\u2019s history book<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we have this year,\u201d the Thunder general manager said days before the 2024-25 season, \u201cis the opportunity to write the 17th chapter, and we&#8217;re really excited about doing that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 17 \u2014\u00a0spoiler alert \u2014 ended with a championship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/sports\/thunder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a> claimed the 2025 NBA title, beating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/sports\/pacers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Pacers<\/a> in a spectacular series, capped by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/06\/22\/thunder-pacers-score-nba-finals-game-7-live-updates-highlights-stats-prediction\/84308073007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">103-91 win in Game 7<\/a> Sunday night at Paycom Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/basketball\/nba\/teams\/oklahoma-city-thunder\/25\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thunder<\/a> was going to be an outlier one way or another depending on how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/playoffs\/2025\/nba-finals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA Finals<\/a> played out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, OKC was too good to lose. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2024\/10\/24\/thunder-schedule-dates-times-tv-streaming\/75705777007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">68-win regular season<\/a> team that seemed destined to raise the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/06\/19\/larry-obrien-championship-trophy-2025-nba-finals-okc-thunder-indiana-pacers\/84279532007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Larry O\u2019Brien Trophy<\/a>. A team that routinely trounced opponents, finishing with the highest average margin of victory in NBA history. Teams are supposed to fail over and over before they finally break through. The playoff scars that adorn eventual champions? The Thunder got here with nary a scratch. That\u2019s not to say it wasn\u2019t earned. Quite the opposite. It speaks to the Thunder\u2019s \u201cuncommon\u201d nature, as coach Mark Daigneault likes to say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The championship is the first in Thunder history. It came 17 years after the franchise relocated from Seattle to Oklahoma City. Thirteen years after its first NBA Finals berth. Nine years after Kevin Durant left Bricktown for The Bay. Six years after the seismic summer of 2019, when the trades of Paul George and franchise icon Russell Westbrook spawned a new era of Thunder basketball.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/basketball\/nba\/players\/shai-gilgeousalexander\/1067856\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a>, the prize of the George trade, has supplanted Westbrook as the greatest Thunder of them all. SGA, the league\u2019s regular-season MVP, capped his remarkable season and playoff run with an NBA Finals MVP-worthy performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren rose to the moment, forming a vaunted Big Three alongside Gilgeous-Alexander.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Daigneault, an anonymous name five years ago when he was hired, shepherded the Thunder through it all. After two 20-something-win seasons, the Thunder made the play-in. Then the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Then, as the No. 1 seed yet again, Daigneault coached the Thunder to the title.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Presti? Only one line was missing from his resume: NBA champion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No longer. Hired at 29 as the franchise\u2019s general manager, this championship was a culmination of Presti\u2019s vision.
