Right?

Well, not if you talk to Tyler Herro.

When asked if the Heat should continue to be viewed as an inner circle title contender heading into next season, the soon-to-be sixth-year guard immediately responded, “I don’t see why not. We have everything we need.”

When Herro says that, he isn’t simply leaning on blind faith or irrational confidence. He has his reasons — reasons outside of the fact that he plays for the one team that you can never truly count out of a fight. For him, it is easy to pinpoint where the growth of teams like the Knicks or 76ers may come from. With the Heat, however, it is much more subtle.

“I’m really excited for this season. Obviously, there are a lot of teams in the East that think they have externally improved. But I think we’ve improved internally,” Herro told me in an exclusive interview.

“It may look a little different, but we have young guys that we hope will continue to get better. Bam Adebayo and I are young guys who are starting to become full-fledged veterans in this league. Terry Rozier is healthy now and ready to compete. Then you have Jimmy Butler, who is extra motivated after not being able to play in the playoffs last season.”

MORE FROM FORBES ADVISOR

Herro added, “We haven’t been healthy yet. But we feel like when we do get healthy, we have a very deep team – a team that is deep enough to make a run in the East and ultimately win the NBA title.”

Last season, the Heat had some of the worst luck in the league when it came to injuries, completely breaking down when it came time to match up with the Celtics in the first round of the 2024 Playoffs. Herro himself missed nearly half the season (40 of 82 games).

In theory, when healthy, this Heat team does tout a good blend of star power (Butler, Adebayo, Herro, and Rozier), youth (Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nikola Jovic, Kel’el Ware, and Pelle Larsson), and useful role players (Duncan Robinson, Haywood Highsmith, Kevin Love, and Josh Richardson).

Herro is working hard to ensure that this theory is able to play out in practice. Over the years, his wirey frame has made it difficult for his body to withstand the rigors of an 82-game season (especially with how willing he is to sacrifice himself for 50/50 balls). So, he’s dedicated his offseason training toward remedying that.

My biggest thing right now is developing my body and trying to get stronger so that I can stay as healthy as possible throughout the season,” Herro told me.

Since he entered the league, Herro’s calling card has been his ability to score both on and off the basketball. Last season, he placed in the 90th percentile in points per 75 possessions (22.9, per Dunks & Threes). Even strengths need improving, though, and while Herro’s scoring volume remains elite, his efficiency hovers around league average (40th percentile in true shooting). Herro wants to up his efficiency while simultaneously maintaining (or even increasing) his scoring volume.

“As for adding to my strengths, I really want to sharpen up my efficiency to maximize my abilities as a scorer,” Herro said.

Becoming more functionally strong will surely aid his crusade, as Herro’s least efficient scoring region is at the rim (6th percentile rim accuracy) — the area of the court where having great strength and body control is the most useful.

Earlier, Herro alluded to how he and his teammate Adebayo are undergoing a transition from blossoming stars to established veterans. In Miami, Herro and Adebayo live in close proximity to one another. During a typical offseason, the two will often spend many days training together at each other’s houses.

However, this year has been a little bit different. While Herro has been tirelessly preparing for the start of the 2024-25 season, his pick-and-roll partner was playing an integral role in guiding Team USA to the Gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“It was fun watching him represent the country and bring home the Gold medal. It was cool because I know all the work we’ve put in together over the years. So, to see him continue to take on a bigger role, both with Team USA and the Heat, it is just really awesome to see,” Herro said. “I’m really happy for him, and I’m ready to get back out on the court with him.”

The Business Side of Tyler Herro

There is no question that Herro is an excellent player on the court, but he’s also a well-rounded individual off it. In the offseason, when he’s not working on his craft, he’s partnering with different companies in order to diversify his financial portfolio while also finding different mediums to express himself as a person away from the hardwood.

Tyler Herro, Miami Heat.

Green Gobbler.

That second part is the major key to Herro’s decision-making process when deciding what companies he wants to work with.

“With all my partnerships, we try to make sure they align with who I am as a person,” Herro explained.

Given his status in the league hierarchy (last season, he was the 48th-highest-paid player in the league, per Spotrac), Herro is never short of brands vying for his services. His list of partnerships includes well-known companies like New Era and Hublot. I thought it was really funny,” Herro joked.

Tyler Herro, Miami Heat.

Green Gobbler.

As for the one-of-one pair of Green Gobbler clogs that were created for Herro to wear in the commercial, it turns out that they are actually pretty sweet and will be a part of Herro’s shoe rotation moving forward.

“I wore them in the video. Then, I wore them the whole day after. They are pretty unique because they look cool and are so damn comfortable,” Herro told me. “My daughter really wanted a pair of the clogs, but I had to tell her, ‘Sorry, these are one-of-one right here. Nobody can get them!’”

His team-up with Green Gobbler is the perfect illustration of the quintessential Herro brand partnership — one-of-a-kind and light-hearted.

“I feel like Green Gobbler isn’t the typical partnership with an NBA player,” Herro said. “But I’m not the typical NBA player.”

Last season, Herro averaged 20.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG
Invesco S&P 500 Pure Growth ETF
, and 4.5 APG in 33.5 minutes per contest.
