After Ayton\u2019s arrival, Quick said Billups believed he could \u201cinstill some work ethic, humility and professionalism into Ayton.\u201d But with a host of promising players who are still forming habits, the Blazers came to the conclusion that Ayton\u2019s \u201cbad ways\u201d weren\u2019t a tenable part of the team\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
But now, as the Blazers\u2019 rebuild is starting to show signs of promise, it is clear the organization believed Billups couldn\u2019t change Ayton. So Portland did what so many teams are reluctant to do: They admitted a mistake and cut ties.<\/p>\n
After taking a $10 million reduction in salary, Ayton will be free to join a new NBA team, his third in eight seasons. Various reports have linked him as a possible target of the Los Angeles Lakers.<\/p>\n
