At the time, both teams believed they were setting themselves up for the future.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka was praised, while Mavs general manager Nico Harrison drew heavy criticism for trading a 26-year-old, five-time All-NBA First Team star.

In the end, neither team contended for a championship this season. Dallas missed the playoffs after falling in the Play-In Tournament, with Davis playing only nine regular-season games due to a left adductor strain.
