After a turbulent 2024-25 campaign, the Mavericks have a lot riding on this season.

The first big step was drafting Cooper Flagg with the #1 overall pick. Flagg is set to be the future of their franchise.

But the next step was signing Kyrie Irving to a three-year, $119 million extension. Since Irving can’t play for most of next season, the Mavericks needed another point guard to fill in.

As such, Dallas went out and signed D’Angelo Russell. It’s clear the Mavericks have a plan to contend for a championship this season.

And to further help them, they signed former LA Lakers head coach Frank Vogel to be an assistant. Vogel, who fans will remember was the head coach of Anthony Davis on the Lakers when they won a championship.

Photo by Harry How/Getty ImagesAnthony Davis loved playing under Frank Vogel on the LA Lakers

Back in January of 2020, during both Frank Vogel and Anthony Davis’ first season with the LA Lakers, ESPN did a feature on the head coach’s stint with the team.

Davis had a lot of positive things to say about Vogel’s coaching style and how he was able to keep the entire side motivated without ever getting too carried away.

“Frank comes in every day, win or lose, with the same attitude. Never too high and never too low. I love his coaching, I love his coaching style — and I love him as a coach.

“What’s impressed me the most is that even when we win, he holds us accountable. When a team sees a coach getting on LeBron or me, the other guys respect him more and know they’ll be held accountable too.”

Jason Kidd also has experience with Frank Vogel

Frank Vogel isn’t just familiar with Anthony Davis. During his time on the Lakers, Jason Kidd was one of his assistant coaches.

Kidd had earned somewhat of a negative reputation as a head coach after his stints with the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks.

But Vogel still took a chance on Kidd, admitting that he wanted a coach with experience in the position, but also one who was a former player.

“I can’t have four video guys on my staff. The right complement for me has always been a respected former player who has coaching experience.

“But you can’t have the mindset that you’re going to look over your shoulder — you need firepower on staff.”

The last time the two were on a coaching staff together, they led a team to an NBA championship. The Mavericks will be hoping that they can repeat the same magic trick this season.

Anthony Davis certainly has a lot of experience playing under Frank Vogel during his time with the LA…

[3790
495,7,149,2074,3716,4034,1698,300,4044,251,150,4033,4043,6,574
0":"post-146319","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-los-angeles-lakers","8":"tag-anthony-davis","9":"tag-basketball","10":"tag-dallas-mavericks","11":"tag-frank-vogel","12":"tag-jason-kidd","13":"tag-la","14":"tag-la-lakers","15":"tag-lakers","16":"tag-lalakers","17":"tag-los-angeles","18":"tag-los-angeles-lakers","19":"tag-losangeles","20":"tag-losangeleslakers","21":"tag-nba","22":"tag-western-conference
["GET
