And somewhere above the court and beyond the locker room was the man who built it all: the Godfather himself, Pat Riley<\/a>. Even well into his seventies (now 80), Riles remained a towering presence in every major decision the franchise made. But for Dragic, it wasn’t just Riley’s legacy that struck him; it was the moment the countless rings came out.<\/p>\n

“First meeting with him (Riley), I remember I came to his office, and he was like, ‘Goran, we are happy to have you, welcome to the team. Now it’s time to go to war, you know what we play for?’ I said, ‘Yes, of course, the championship.’And he opened the drawer and showed all nine rings,” Dragic recalled in an exclusive interview with Basketball Network.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t just a random flex from Riley, it was a statement about what was the mission ahead of them.<\/p>\n

“He’s like, choose one, I’m like, ‘What?!’ At that time, I just picked one ring, he was like, ‘Okay, we are going to get you one.’ You know, it never happened, but if I’m honest, I’ve spent the best seven years in Miami\u2026” the lefty point guard added.<\/p>\n

Goran became a Heat icon<\/p>\n

What made Dragic a perfect fit for the Heat wasn’t just the skill \u2014 it was the edge. Everything that doesn’t show on the box score. He wasn’t a volume shooter or a flashy name, but he brought it every single night. That made him one of Erik Spoelstra’s favorite soldiers.<\/p>\n

He averaged double digits in every full season with the franchise, earned an All-Star nod in 2018, and led with the kind of effort Riley’s culture demands. Dragic almost got a ring in the Bubble<\/p>\n

In 2020, inside the strangest environment the NBA has ever seen, Dragic turned back the clock and gave the Heat everything he had. Alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, he was a key piece in Miami’s stunning run to the Finals in the Orlando bubble. But when the moment came to finish the story, his body didn’t cooperate \u2014 a torn plantar fascia in Game 1 all but ended his Finals before they began.<\/p>\n

Miami fell to the Lakers in six, and that elusive ring never found its way to Dragic’s finger. Still, what he gave the Heat can’t be measured by jewelry.<\/p>\n

The man they call “The Dragon” never got to add a ring to Riley’s drawer \u2014 but he became part of the Heat family forever.<\/p>\n
