George Wellington Streeter\u2019s steamboat Reutan <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-deestrick-of-lake-michi\/176276505\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ran aground<\/a> on a Near North Side sandbar now known as Streeterville.<\/p>\n<p>From the 1880s until his death in 1921, Streeter asserted not just ownership but sovereignty over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/01\/14\/captain-streeters-long-standoff-with-chicago\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">186 acres of prime lakeshore<\/a>, between the mouth of the Chicago River and Oak Street.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downesstudio.net\/streeter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">8-foot bronze statue<\/a> of Streeter \u2014 wearing a top hat and holding pup Spot \u2014 stands at the northwest corner of McClurg Court and Grand Avenue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Boxing legend Jack Johnson and his wife Lucille in an undated photo. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p>1912:\u00a0Black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson opened\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/P5uBNFc07HK0Y-HqqutVB9y3PrQpW4nlKNssZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gLc5iMlKKfKlLikd-3ORtrxy3OZw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/P5uBNFc07HK0Y-HqqutVB9y3PrQpW4nlKNssZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gLc5iMlKKfKlLikd-3ORtrxy3OZw&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1752163588005000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3vskwNgX4MO8gOvrEKQDNO\">Cafe de Champion<\/a>, 41 W. 31st St. in Bronzeville. But only three months after it opened to fanfare, his wife, Etta, died by suicide in the couple\u2019s apartment above the venue while revelers partied below. The shooting <a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/3g6LXhQRLj50Y1rkM6hHnd_GeMkoX22nXMQ5ZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gAQQr2Pnoe4TLtI8KdGFCLjgEELg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/3g6LXhQRLj50Y1rkM6hHnd_GeMkoX22nXMQ5ZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gAQQr2Pnoe4TLtI8KdGFCLjgEELg&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1752163588005000&amp;usg=AOvVaw233uu3iL3QyvjqMhCpKMen\">made the front page of the Tribune<\/a>\u00a0the next day.<\/p>\n<p>In 1913, an all-white jury in Chicago\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/xteRSrAw8pM0YPLQle2zRAZnBYkjktw-jtrgZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gkW6xc44IfK-Lyium-bmQsW5FutA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/xteRSrAw8pM0YPLQle2zRAZnBYkjktw-jtrgZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gkW6xc44IfK-Lyium-bmQsW5FutA&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1752163588005000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2tDBxTLYR0cjAXlQ4rfTJt\">convicted<\/a>\u00a0Johnson of traveling with his white girlfriend, Lucille Cameron, in violation of the Mann Act, which made it illegal to transport women across state lines for \u201cimmoral\u201d purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The case would later be held up as a deplorable example of institutional racism in early 20th-century America. Johnson was <a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/zIPkR_l0iya0Y69dEP3enn0f4C1GxpaLlYN7ZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4ggS-PIJEfeKKLSlZflsRH0q4Evig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/zIPkR_l0iya0Y69dEP3enn0f4C1GxpaLlYN7ZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4ggS-PIJEfeKKLSlZflsRH0q4Evig&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1752163588005000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1TeX3Rvdb-iaR4xNVKSr1c\">sentenced<\/a>\u00a0to a year and a day in prison in June 1913, but fled to Canada with Cameron, whom he married while free on bond. (Chicago Herald and Examiner)<\/p>\n<p>1925: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2014\/01\/26\/1925s-scopes-trial-who-made-a-monkey-of-whom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Thomas Scopes<\/a>, charged with teaching evolution in Tennessee, went to court in the celebrated \u201cMonkey Trial.\u201d WGN Radio broadcasted the proceedings live \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/03\/13\/on-centennial-of-the-scopes-trial-chicagoans-honor-clarence-darrow-at-jackson-park-bridge-named-in-his-honor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clarence Darrow\u2019s defense<\/a> of Scopes \u2014 a milestone for the new medium of radio, and a flesh-and-blood Chicago institution.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A crowd of 5,000 civil rights marchers swarmed down State Street on July 10, 1966, after a rally at Soldier Field where the Rev. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p>1966: Two years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/01\/12\/vintage-chicago-tribune-martin-luther-king-jr-leads-the-first-significant-freedom-movement-in-the-north\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/a> was the keynote speaker at the Illinois Rally for Civil Rights at Soldier Field, he returned to the venue to deliver another speech on a sweltering day.<\/p>\n<p>King told the 30,000 attendees, \u201cThis day we must decide to fill up the jails of Chicago, if necessary, in order to end slums.\u201d He outlined <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-martin-luther-king-jr-p\/154585702\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">14 basic goals<\/a> of the Chicago Freedom Movement and later posted them to the LaSalle Street entrance of City Hall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Tribune reporter Sam Smith called new Chicago Bulls head coach Phil Jackson, &quot;a low-key scholarly sort,&quot; when the then 43-year-old was introduced by the team on July 10, 1989. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>1989: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1989\/07\/10\/phil-jackson-gets-the-chicago-bulls-coaching-job-in-1989\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Jackson<\/a> was hired as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, replacing Doug Collins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/05\/05\/holy-expletive-thats-michael-jordan-a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-the-last-dance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Holy (expletive)!
