Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst of ESPN pulled back the curtain. They revealed the subtle power plays both sides have made. The microaggressions, the cold shoulders, and the cryptic messages all tell the same story. A Lakers and LeBron James split didn’t appear overnight — it’s been simmering for months.

It all traces back to that meeting on May 3. Dončić, his longtime manager Lara Beth Seager, GM Rob Pelinka, and new coach JJ Redick made a very public appearance together outside of Craig’s restaurant on Melrose Avenue. It screamed “new era.” Then came the silence from LeBron. A month later, he responded through his agent and longtime friend Rich Paul — a statement that sent shockwaves through the NBA.

How Subtle Moves Became Loud Signals

For years, LeBron kept the Lakers front office on edge with vague statements and calculated jabs. But this time felt different — colder, more final. Brian Windhorst later revealed that the Lakers front office privately viewed LeBron’s deal as an “expiring contract.” That’s not just a technical detail — it’s a slap in the face for a player of his caliber. LeBron picked up his player option for the first time in his career.

Ramona Shelburne writes: “The Lakers’ posture did not come as a surprise to James, sources said. But it also did not go down easily.” After all he’s done for this team, this is how it’s going to end?

The Lakers made it clear where their loyalty lies. Before the Doncic trade, they failed to give LeBron significant notice about Davis leaving. He forgave it — barely — because of how much he respects Luka. But then, they rubbed salt in the wound by giving Doncic the courtesy call when the Buss family sold a majority stake. LeBron? He found out with the rest of us.

LeBron Responds, Cryptic as Ever

LeBron didn’t lash out directly. He never does. He prefers subtle, sharp jabs. After the Lakers were bounced, a reporter asked if the Doncic trade made things more physical for him. LeBron’s answer was a known move from his playbook: “No comment. I never say that because my guy AD said what he needed and he was gone the following week.”

Translation? He knows exactly how the Lakers are treating him. They have shown from the Dončić trade to their moves in free agency that they are planning on a future without him abruptly. He is now plotting his way out.

Shelburne captured it best when she wrote, “Nothing LeBron does is a coincidence,” quoting a source close to him. The cryptic social media posts backed it up. He wore a hat saying “Welcome Home” playing golf in Cleveland. LeBron reposted photos of a Lakers team broadcaster in a Cavaliers jersey. He called the jersey “Proper attire.” Coincidence? No shot.

What’s At Stake For Luka And The Lakers

If this split gets nasty, the Lakers won’t just lose LeBron. They’ll risk Luka’s trust too. Luka watched his last team push him out poorly. If he sees the Lakers mistreat LeBron —one of his idols — why would he stick around? The Lakers and LeBron James split could create ripples for years if it’s handled with this same cold indifference.

A Chance To End It The Right Way

The blueprint is simple: show respect. Celebrate LeBron’s run. Acknowledge the 2020 title. Give him the farewell he deserves. Or watch this split poison the locker room and possibly the team’s future with Luka.

The team could be better than expected this season, forcing both LeBron and the team’s top brass to realize they are each other’s best option and to work together to see out the season. Perhaps they do so well that LeBron leaves via a sign-and-trade, gifting the team some assets as he departs. This will require both sides to resolve to let this era end gracefully. Make no mistake — grace must be the name of the game.

The clock is ticking. The Lakers can still get this right. But if they don’t, the King’s last chapter in LA might become the ugliest plot twist in franchise history.

Credit:© Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images

LOS ANGELES – By now, even casual basketball fans know about the soap opera brewing in Los Angeles.…

[3790
3189,7,4034,1698,300,4044,185,251,150,4033,4043,368,6,5600,2085,3088
0":"post-165315","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-los-angeles-lakers","8":"tag-2025-free-agency","9":"tag-basketball","10":"tag-la","11":"tag-la-lakers","12":"tag-lakers","13":"tag-lalakers","14":"tag-lebron-james","15":"tag-los-angeles","16":"tag-los-angeles-lakers","17":"tag-losangeles","18":"tag-losangeleslakers","19":"tag-luka-doncic","20":"tag-nba","21":"tag-nba-contracts","22":"tag-nba-offseason","23":"tag-rob-pelinka
["GET
