{"id":18357,"date":"2025-05-08T11:04:30","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T11:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/18357\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T11:04:30","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T11:04:30","slug":"gregg-popovich-will-no-longer-coach-san-antonio-spurs-transitioning-to-president-of-basketball-operations-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/18357\/","title":{"rendered":"Gregg Popovich will no longer coach San Antonio Spurs, transitioning to president of basketball operations role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, will no longer be their head coach, the team confirmed in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the statement, the Spurs said Popovich will become the team\u2019s newest president of basketball operations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">ESPN NBA reporter Shams Charania first <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/1918331462526304329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/1918331462526304329\">reported the news on Friday morning<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to Charania, assistant coach Mitch Johnson \u2014 who served as the Spurs\u2019 interim head coach during most of the 2024-25 regular season \u2014 will be named the team\u2019s new head coach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Spurs also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2025\/05\/02\/mitch-johnson-will-take-over-as-spurs-head-coach-as-gregg-popovich-steps-down-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2025\/05\/02\/mitch-johnson-will-take-over-as-spurs-head-coach-as-gregg-popovich-steps-down-report-says\/\">confirmed Johnson\u2019s promotion to head coach on Friday afternoon<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhile my love and passion for the game remain, I\u2019ve decided it\u2019s time to step away as head coach,\u201d Popovich said in a statement provided by the team. \u201cI\u2019m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The team also released a statement from Spurs governor Peter J. Holt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cCoach Pop\u2019s extraordinary impact on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs and the game of basketball is profound,\u201d Holt said in the statement. \u201cHis accolades and awards don\u2019t do justice to the impact he has had on so many people. He is truly one-of-one as a person, leader and coach. Our entire family, alongside fans from across the globe, are grateful for his remarkable 29-year run as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a statement on Friday about Popovich: <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cGregg Popovich\u2019s sustained success as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs is incomparable. In addition to his many accolades, including five NBA championships, the most wins in league history and an Olympic gold medal, Coach Pop has developed generations of players and coaches and been a driving force behind the global growth of basketball. There are few people in the basketball community as beloved and revered as Coach Pop. We thank him for his extraordinary leadership and commitment to our sport and wish him well as he embarks on his new role with the Spurs organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Popovich\u2019s official transition to the Spurs front office caps a six-month period when the franchise was without its longtime head coach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Popovich, 76, suffered a mild stroke on Nov. 2, 2024, just before the Spurs were preparing to host the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Frost Bank Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">At that point in the season, Popovich coached the team\u2019s first five games of the 2024-25 regular season before Johnson stepped in as interim head coach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Spurs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2024\/11\/13\/spurs-head-coach-gregg-popovich-suffered-mild-stroke-team-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2024\/11\/13\/spurs-head-coach-gregg-popovich-suffered-mild-stroke-team-says\/\">announced Popovich\u2019s diagnosis on Nov. 13, 2024.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On Feb. 27, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2025\/02\/27\/i-will-continue-to-focus-on-my-health-gregg-popovich-wont-return-to-coach-spurs-this-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2025\/02\/27\/i-will-continue-to-focus-on-my-health-gregg-popovich-wont-return-to-coach-spurs-this-season\/\">Popovich and the Spurs announced that he would not return<\/a> to coach the team for the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201dI will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future,&#8221; Popovich said in a statement released by the team on Feb. 27.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">After a 2-3 start, Johnson finished the final 77 regular-season games with a 32-45 record (34-48 overall).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On April 15, according to multiple reports, Popovich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2025\/04\/18\/san-antonio-spurs-coach-gregg-popovich-suffers-medical-incident-at-restaurant-reports-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2025\/04\/18\/san-antonio-spurs-coach-gregg-popovich-suffers-medical-incident-at-restaurant-reports-say\/\">experienced at least his second medical incident<\/a> in the last calendar year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He reportedly suffered the incident at a restaurant. ESPN first reported on the medical incident. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to a TMZ report, Popovich allegedly \u201cfainted\u201d at the restaurant. The website also shared video of a man the outlet identified as Popovich being placed onto a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On April 18, KSAT reached out to the Spurs, but a team spokesperson declined to comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A San Antonio Fire Department spokesperson told KSAT that the agency couldn\u2019t confirm whether they transported Popovich to the hospital on April 15. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, they did confirm that a crew responded to a Ruth\u2019s Chris Steak House on Jones Maltsberger around 8:30 p.m. on April 15 for a report of a man around 80 who fainted at a table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The man was transported to the hospital as a precaution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A Google Maps view of the location appears to line up with the video published by TMZ that reportedly shows Popovich being loaded into an SAFD ambulance.<\/p>\n<p>BackgroundSan Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, center, claps during the basketball team&#8217;s parade and celebration of their fifth NBA Championship, Wednesday,  June 18, 2014, in San Antonio. Pop spent 29 seasons on the sideline for the Silver and Black, making him the only coach in NBA history to spend more than 25 years with one franchise, one of eight to do that in all major U.S. sports leagues. All rights reserved)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Along with former point guard Tony Parker, Pop was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2023, joining other Spurs greats Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and George Gervin, just to name a few. Pop was born in East Chicago, Indiana, and after high school, received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. In 1988, Pop made the move to the NBA and his first stint with the Spurs, serving as an assistant coach under head coach Larry Brown. He spent four seasons with the team before leaving to join Don Nelson\u2019s staff in Golden State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">In 1994, Pop would return to San Antonio after being named general manager and vice president of basketball operations. He took over as head coach midway through the 1996-97 season. Off the court, Pop helped create the Spurs Youth Basketball League, which is celebrating 35 years this season.
