LAWRENCE \u2014\u00a0Kansas Athletics released a statement Thursday night, July 24, revealing a medical situation regarding Kansas basketball coach Bill Self<\/a>.<\/p>\n

KU Athletics outlined Self wasn\u2019t feeling well and was dealing with symptoms Thursday that were described as concerning. He was then taken to a local hospital, and after a procedure \u2014\u00a0which was described as having gone well \u2014\u00a0he is expected to recover fully. \u201cKansas men\u2019s basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday,\u201d the Kansas Athletics statement read. \u201cHe was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted. The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is not the first time in recent years Self has experienced a health issue that KU has addressed publicly. In 2023, Self did not coach in the Big 12 Conference tournament due to health issues. He also did not coach in the NCAA tournament as that season progressed.<\/p>\n

According to a KU release that followed the end of Kansas\u2019 time in the Big 12 tournament in 2023, Self received treatment from the University of Kansas Health System after arriving with complaints of chest tightness and balance concerns. While being treated, he \u201cunderwent a standard heart catheterization and had two stents placed for the treatment of blocked arteries.\u201d Then, as well, he responded well to the treatment, was expected to make a full recovery and was discharged.<\/p>\n

In recent days, Self spoke to the media ahead of the upcoming 2025-26 season. He\u2019s been the head coach at KU since the 2003-04 season, and been the head coach at multiple stops before that. With the Jayhawks, he\u2019s won a pair of national championships and enjoyed a lot of success in the Big 12.<\/p>\n
