University of Kansas<\/a> men’s basketball coach Bill Self has been released from the hospital after experiencing heart problems.<\/p>\n

The two-time national championship-winning head coach was rushed to Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Thursday<\/a> after experiencing ‘some concerning symptoms’.<\/p>\n

According to the school, Self was released on Saturday and is resting at home after two stents were inserted into his heart. He is expected to make a full recovery.<\/p>\n

In a statement after his release, Self said, ‘I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay there.<\/p>\n

‘I feel strong and am excited to be home. Our team has had a productive summer and look forward to our batteries being recharged and prepping for this upcoming season.’<\/p>\n

Self has had issues with his heart in the past. In 2023, he missed the Big XII Conference men’s basketball tournament and the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n

Self is the winningest coach in the history of the storied program that has four national titles<\/p>\n

Self’s Jayhawks made it to the conference tournament title game that season before losing to Texas 76-56.<\/p>\n

Without Self in March Madness in 2023, a one-seeded Kansas was easily able to handle 16-seed Howard. But they were knocked out in the next round by eight-seed Arkansas 72-71.<\/p>\n

The 62-year-old has been in charge of the Jayhawks since 2003 after arriving from the University of Illinois.<\/p>\n

The Oklahoma native has reached the NCAA Tournament every season he’s been in charge at Kansas – advancing to eight Elite Eights and three Final Fours.<\/p>\n

In 2008, just his fifth season in charge, Self won his first national title as senior Mario Chalmers hit an iconic buzzer-beating shot to force overtime. Kansas would go on to beat a Derrick Rose-led Memphis team 75-68 to win their first title in 20 years.<\/p>\n

Self would have to wait until 2022 to win his second title. Kansas was once again a one-seed and came back from a 15-point deficit to beat North Carolina in New Orleans to win the championship.<\/p>\n

He is one of three active NCAA Division I coaches with multiple national titles – alongside St. John’s coach Rick Pitino and UConn coach Dan Hurley.<\/p>\n

Self is the winningest coach in Kansas’ history (609 wins), won 18 regular-season Big XII titles and eight Big XII Tournament crowns.<\/p>\n

Speculation around Self’s future has grown for years – with many wondering when the coach will retire. He shut down those discussions multiple times last year.<\/p>\n
