Although the Bucks struggled over the next few years, Antetokounmpo showed progress, and in 2016–17 he had a breakthrough season, earning the league’s Most Improved Player award. A versatile forward, he was praised for both his offensive and defensive play. The Bucks made the playoffs that season but lost in the first round. After overcoming multiple series deficits, Milwaukee reached the title round, and there Antetokounmpo put on one of the most dominating performances in finals history. Although the team lost the first two games to the Phoenix Suns, Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to four straight victories, and in the deciding game six he scored an astounding 50 points.
