Looks like a bit of a tweener on this roster, neither quite guard nor wing. Will be interesting to see how his role develops across the autumn.

∎ Reed Bailey: Should be one of Indiana’s primary offensive options in all manner of situations. Good in ball screens and with the ball in his hands, even in the open floor. This game won’t have tested his rebounding and defensive capacity.

∎ Lamar Wilkerson: Clearly one of Indiana’s go-to players. Not just for his scoring talent but because of the way teammates look for and defer to him. The offense runs through him, not around him. If he can make shots at near the level he did at Sam Houston State, that emphasis will be justified.

∎ Sam Alexis: His energy helped snap Indiana out of a first-half malaise. It appears DeVries will rely on him like a starter, even when he plays from the bench, both in terms of minutes and in terms of role. IU seemed particularly intent upon getting him involved in transition.

∎ Conor Enright: Worked hard, and really emphasized moving the ball when he touched it offensively. Maybe it’s confirmation bias, but it felt noticeable he was the second-most experienced DeVries-coached player on the floor.

∎ Tayton Conerway: A potentially dangerous two-way player, thanks to a really good offensive feel. But more than that, a tip-of-the-spear defender whose active hands and instincts will keep covers honest this season. Certainly ranked among the most as-advertised top-line new faces Wednesday.

∎ Nick Dorn: Traveled with the team but did not play. Darian DeVries has suggested it will be autumn before Dorn returns to action because of injury.

∎ Josh Harris: Left another solid impression running mostly with the second unit. Showed the same activity and explosiveness we saw last week at open practice. Will need to develop more offensively to compensate for some size limitations but the tools are there.

∎ Trent Sisley: Has a chance to play real minutes for this team. The shot is there. The offensive feel is there. Sisley even looked comfortable defensively, if sometimes better solo than fitting into the wider defensive concepts. The freshman continues to leave a strong early impression.

∎ Tucker DeVries: Clearly this team’s most-experienced player, both in terms of years and also time on task in this system. Showcased great feel both in his own offense and in bringing others into the play. Active defensively and on the glass, where Indiana will need him to play bigger than his frame this season if these small lineups persist. Might be this team’s best shooter too, at least in terms of rhythm and form. No one exerts greater influence over Indiana right now.

∎ Aleksa Ristic: Played big minutes in the second half, which will do him good given how much practice time he’s missed. Handled the ball at point and showed good feel for pace and timing. Got involved around the rim offensively. Easy to see a college prospect there.

Note: Jason Drake (injury) and Andrej Acimovic (visa) will not be with Indiana during this week’s trip.

Want more Hoosiers coverage? Zach Osterman, Michael Niziolek and Chloe Peterson keep up with IU all season. Sign up for IndyStar’s Hoosiers newsletter. Listen to Mind Your Banners, our IU Athletics-centric podcast, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico – The Darian DeVries era at Indiana began with an easy win Wednesday, as the…

[3724
12038,7,657,12040,319,325,12509,292,12039,113,16609,318,67,61,134,132,36614,19629,36615,10216,37889,66,83,17,2196
0":"post-216884","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-basketball","8":"tag-12038","9":"tag-basketball","10":"tag-big","11":"tag-big-10-hub","12":"tag-college","13":"tag-college-sports","14":"tag-hoosiers","15":"tag-houston","16":"tag-hub","17":"tag-indiana","18":"tag-indiana-hoosiers-mens-basketball","19":"tag-mens","20":"tag-news","21":"tag-overall","22":"tag-overall-positive","23":"tag-positive","24":"tag-puerto","25":"tag-puerto-rico","26":"tag-rico","27":"tag-sam","28":"tag-sam-houston-state-university","29":"tag-sports","30":"tag-sports-news","31":"tag-state","32":"tag-university
["GET
