Okay, pack it up, divas. The WNBA dildo situation<\/a> is no longer a fun, possibly queer-coded bit of mischief. Instead, Donald Trump Jr. <\/a>has gotten ahold of the story and is posting memes about it on Instagram. You\u2019re probably like \u201cWhat?,\u201d and honestly, I\u2019m right there with you. Let me to try and explain.<\/p>\n In case you need a refresher, a lime-green dildo has become the talk of the WNBA over the past week or so. Last Tuesday, while the Atlanta Dream was playing the Golden State Valkyries, a sex toy the color of cartoon slime was thrown onto the court during the fourth quarter. While some players mentioned that it was dangerous to throw anything at players, others had a laugh about it. \u201cDamn how my shit get there,\u201d tweeted<\/a> Las Vegas Aces guard Kierstan Bell.<\/p>\n For the next week, bright-green dildos kept being thrown onto the court<\/a>. The second one appeared in Chicago when the Sky played the Valkyries; a third appeared in Los Angeles when the Sparks played the Fever this past Tuesday. Fever player Sophie Cunningham tweeted \u201cstop throwing dildos on the court \u2026 you\u2019re going to hurt one of us,\u201d and then appeared to be hit with one<\/a> in L.A.<\/p>\n And now, the hehe-ing\u00a0is officially over, because on Thursday Donald Trump Jr. posted a meme of \u2026 his dad being the one throwing the dildo? To make things worse, he also folded Trump\u2019s little trip to the roof of the White House<\/a> earlier this week into his meme, which proposes that Trump was throwing the dildo onto a WNBA court from the roof. \u201cPosted without further comment,\u201d he captioned the image, alongside some laugh-crying emoji.<\/p>\n I sort of do need further comment, though. Is the joke that it would be funny if the president threw a dildo at some professional female athletes? Couldn\u2019t be, since\u00a0Republicans want to \u201cprotect\u201d women in sports<\/a>. On the other hand, maybe the meme is not really trying to be funny, and is instead an exercise in being able to say, \u201cI recognize both of these images.\u201d That being said, the top comment on his post is \u201cAmerica is so back \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8\ud83d\udd25,\u201d so it seems to be working for his target audience.<\/p>\n In other bad news about the dildo, it turns out it was never even fun. On Thursday, The Athletic<\/a> reported that the dildo-throwing might be connected to a meme coin called Green Dildo Coin, which \u201csaw a trading volume of more than $1.5 million between Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.\u201d Apparently, the Green Dildo Coin community (?) has suggested they\u2019re in touch with the throwers during livestream chats, where messages about a \u201cpotential tosser (in Seattle)\u201d and \u201cconfirmation L.A. is out of the building\u201d have been sent.<\/p>\n A man claiming, anonymously, to have insight into the situation told ESPN<\/a> that he and a group of crypto investors had orchestrated the stunts. \u201cIt was more or less like an opportunistic approach to, you know, what is already trending,\u201d he said. \u201cWhere is there already controversy and how do we intercept some of that attention?\u201d<\/p>\n Unfortunately, mission accomplished.<\/p>\n Stay in touch.<\/p>\n Get the Cut newsletter delivered daily<\/p>\n Vox Media, LLC Terms and Privacy Notice<\/p>\n
