His momentum was severely underrated, however, as his feet overtook his head. Turning, hurtling due West, Markkanen\u2019s descent was slowed by the feet of the Rocky Mountains.<\/p>\n And when you get to the mountain, you have only one remaining option: ascend. Gripping the crumbling cliff face, hugging every slight foothold, clawing at every last grain of grip, the average climber would carefully and silently strain over every step of the expedition to the summit.<\/p>\n \u2026you have only one remaining option: ascend<\/p>\n But here\u2019s the thing. After a spine-rattling bang and a cloud of dust, Utah\u2019s newest Finn stood triumphant in the wreckage, leaving a Markkanen-shaped hole passing clean through the solid stone of the Wasatch Range. Did he ever show signs of such indomitable capability as the pure force of nature we witnessed? If you tuned into Markkanen\u2019s Eurobasket spree, your jaw could\u2019ve been spared from its free fall.<\/p>\n Entering the playoff portion of the European tournament, this FIBA freak lit the fuse and took to the skies. 33 points per game is nice enough on its own, but the method in which he collected his buckets was unlike anything before witnessed in a Markkanen performance. He knocked through over 40% of his looks. An extreme temperature warning was put into effect within the crowded arena as the basketball burst into flame upon every touch from Lauri. He was all-encompassing. Unstoppable. Revelatory. Markkanen was so good, in fact, that a growing narrative developed that as long as he remained on the roster, the Utah Jazz rebuild was doomed \u2014 they couldn\u2019t lose enough.<\/p>\n One more round for old time\u2019s sake<\/p>\n We\u2019re at the doorstep of Markkanen\u2019s fourth season in Utah. Fatigue is a basketball killer, and it becomes very clear to onlookers when neither side is really giving the game their full effort. It\u2019s shot-chucking, plain and simple. If Lauri were to dog it a bit in favor of Utah\u2019s rebuilding direction, you\u2019d see a statline very similar to that of last season\u2019s.<\/p>\n But there has been a shift in the atmosphere over the offseason. Utah has tweaked its internal bureaucracy<\/a>. They drafted a potential franchise centerpiece<\/a>. And all of a sudden, it\u2019s Eurobasket season once again, and Lauri is donning his nation\u2019s flag.<\/p>\n Now, in preparation for Eurobasket, he\u2019s returned to a deified form. A titan of triples. A mammoth of shot creation and embodied energy in the form of a basketball player. He\u2019s been completely unstoppable in the international circuit, almost as if to declare to the world that The Finnisher is not dead.<\/p>\n This performance has been followed by another mouthful of a statline. 31 more points in a clobbering of Belgium. He\u2019s attacking his neighboring countries with deadly force. Alert the National Guard.<\/p>\n Utah Jazz basketball may be fun again for the first time in a long time.
