The White Stockings (forerunners of the Chicago Cubs) shut out the Cincinnati Red Stockings 6-0.<\/p>\n<p>The MVP, according to the Tribune, was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-first-national-league-ba\/172016750\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the fans<\/a>: \u201cThe Tribune believes that so well-behaved, good-humored, and impartial an audience can be found nowhere else in the country. (Steve Simoneau\/AP)<\/p>\n<p>1995: For the first time since his first retirement, Michael Jordan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1995\/05\/11\/jordans-numbers-add-up-for-bulls-and-their-hack-a-shaq-defense\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">put No. 23 back on<\/a> for the Chicago Bulls during Game 2 of a playoff series against the Orlando Magic. Jordan scored 38 points in a 104-94 win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter his third or fourth foul, I was looking for 45 up on the scoreboard and couldn\u2019t see it,\u201d Orlando Magic coach Brian Hill said. \u201cThen I noticed 23 up there and I looked at his shirt and said, \u2018Oh (expletive), he\u2019s wearing 23 tonight.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bulls were fined $25,000 by the NBA for allowing Jordan to wear his old number.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Among those killed in a Brown's Chicken &amp; Pasta restaurant in Palatine on Jan. 8, 1993, were Richard E. and Lynn Ehlenfeldt, a couple who bought the business just months earlier; Guadalupe Maldonado, an immigrant cook; and Michael C. The victims included the two restaurant owners and five workers, two of whom were Palatine High School students.<\/p>\n<p>The case went unsolved for nearly a decade until police\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/JtC1miqj8Mp0YdMrUCNddC-zK_4Ev7r8xnucZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gRelvClAHeLIL5RiT8uROnOEHuaQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/JtC1miqj8Mp0YdMrUCNddC-zK_4Ev7r8xnucZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gRelvClAHeLIL5RiT8uROnOEHuaQ&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746882204934000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2KdaOhJWw3cNJEV8-Px30v\">arrested<\/a>\u00a0Luna and James Degorski in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Luna was sentenced to life in prison without parole. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>Also in 2007: Former Chicago Ald. Edward Vrdolyak was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-feds-catch-up-with-fast\/172015395\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indicted<\/a> on bribery and fraud charges.<\/p>\n<p>One of Chicago\u2019s most infamous aldermen, Vrdolyak became a national figure by leading a mostly white bloc of 29 City Council members to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/05\/09\/flashback-chicagos-council-wars-pitted-defiant-white-aldermen-against-a-reform-minded-harold-washington\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/05\/09\/flashback-chicagos-council-wars-pitted-defiant-white-aldermen-against-a-reform-minded-harold-washington\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oppose the efforts<\/a> of the city\u2019s first Black mayor, Harold Washington. Nicknamed \u201cFast Eddie,\u201d Vrdolyak was alderman of the Southeast Side\u2019s 10th Ward from 1971 to 1987, the year he, appearing on the Illinois Solidarity Party ticket, ran for mayor against Washington and lost.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/the-dishonor-roll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Dishonor Roll: Meet the public officials who helped build Illinois\u2019 culture of corruption<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Years later, Vrdolyak was charged and pleaded guilty on two separate occasions. In 2009, he was sentenced to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2010\/10\/15\/vrdolyak-resentenced-to-10-months-in-prison\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2010\/10\/15\/vrdolyak-resentenced-to-10-months-in-prison\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 months<\/a>\u00a0in prison after pleading guilty the previous year to conspiring to commit mail fraud in a scheme to collect a $1.5 million fee when Rosalind Franklin University went to sell a Gold Coast property.
