The franchise has never moved up in the order in 15 previous draft lotteries.

The Mavericks own just one pick in the June 25 draft, with the Utah Jazz having received Dallas’ 2025 second-round pick in the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade.

Here’s a look at Dallas’ lottery history and what to watch for Monday.

How the Mavericks got here

The Mavericks finished the 2024-25 season tied with the Chicago Bulls for the 10th-worst record in basketball at 39-43. A random drawing gave Dallas the tiebreaker and slight edge in the odds, but the two teams essentially split their lottery chances. The 11th and 12th spots remain the most likely.

Mavericks legend Rolando Blackman will represent the team onstage during ESPN’s live broadcast of the results, while another member of the organization, who has not yet been announced, will be behind the scenes to watch the ping pong ball draw earlier in the evening.

How to watch

Date: Monday, May 12

Time: 6 p.m.

TV: ESPN

How does it work?

Fourteen ping pong balls, numbered 1-14, are placed in a hopper, with the potential for 1,001 different four-ball draws. Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations based on their final record.

At least three four-number combinations will be drawn, slotting teams with picks Nos. 1-3 in this year’s draft.

In the event that a team has one of its combinations drawn more than once, the balls are drawn again until three different teams have been determined.

What’s the Mavericks’ draft lottery history?

Luck hasn’t been entirely been on the Mavericks’ side when it comes to the NBA draft lottery, but in their most recent appearance in 2023, Dallas received the 10th pick — in line with its 10th-worst record in the NBA — rather than conveying it to New York as final payment for the original Kristaps Porzingis trade in January 2019.

Here’s a look at the history and the players Dallas has selected or traded for via the draft lottery:

2023: Dereck Lively II, from Oklahoma City in exchange for Cason Wallace

– Mavericks keep their pick, miss out on Wembanyama

2019: No one

– Mavs miss out on top 5, convey selection to Atlanta to complete Doncic deal

2018: Luka Doncic, from Atlanta in exchange for Trae Young

– Luka Doncic-Trae Young deal may have finally turned Dallas’ luck around

2017: Dennis Smith Jr. (9)

– In Dennis Smith Jr., Mavs hoped for a point guard of the future

2013: Kelly Olynyk (13)

– The year Dallas passed on Giannis Antetokounmpo

2000: Etan Thomas (12)

– A really, really bad year to have a bunch of picks

1998: Robert Traylor (6)

– The major risk Dallas took with Dirk Nowitzki still on the board

1996: Samaki Walker (9)

1995: Cherokee Parks (12)

1994: Jason Kidd (2)

1993: Jamal Mashburn (4)

1992: Jim Jackson (4)

1991: Doug Smith (6)

1989: Randy White (8)

1986: Roy Tarpley (7, via Cleveland)

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks hope to land a quality pick, perhaps even a top-four selection, in Monday…

[5
7,1607,149,736,6,12,249
0":"post-24972","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nba-draft","8":"tag-basketball","9":"tag-basketball-segments","10":"tag-dallas-mavericks","11":"tag-men","12":"tag-nba","13":"tag-nba-draft","14":"tag-nba-draft-lottery
["GET
