DALLAS \u2014 The Dallas Mavericks hope to land a quality pick, perhaps even a top-four selection, in Monday night\u2019s draft lottery.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re slotted at No. 11, and that\u2019s most likely where they\u2019ll stay when the NBA draws ping pong balls to determine the top 14 picks. The franchise has never moved up in the order in 15 previous draft lotteries.<\/p>\n
The Mavericks own just one pick in the June 25 draft, with the Utah Jazz having received Dallas\u2019 2025 second-round pick in the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s a look at Dallas\u2019 lottery history and what to watch for Monday.<\/p>\n
How the Mavericks got here<\/p>\n
The Mavericks finished the 2024-25 season tied with the Chicago Bulls for the 10th-worst record in basketball at 39-43. A random drawing gave Dallas the tiebreaker and slight edge in the odds, but the two teams essentially split their lottery chances. The 11th and 12th spots remain the most likely.<\/p>\n
Mavericks legend Rolando Blackman will represent the team onstage during ESPN\u2019s live broadcast of the results, while another member of the organization, who has not yet been announced, will be behind the scenes to watch the ping pong ball draw earlier in the evening.<\/p>\n

How does it work?<\/p>\n
Fourteen ping pong balls, numbered 1-14, are placed in a hopper, with the potential for 1,001 different four-ball draws. Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations based on their final record.<\/p>\n
At least three four-number combinations will be drawn, slotting teams with picks Nos. 1-3 in this year\u2019s draft.<\/p>\n
In the event that a team has one of its combinations drawn more than once, the balls are drawn again until three different teams have been determined.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s the Mavericks\u2019 draft lottery history?<\/p>\n
Luck hasn\u2019t been entirely been on the Mavericks\u2019 side when it comes to the NBA draft lottery, but in their most recent appearance in 2023, Dallas received the 10th pick \u2014 in line with its 10th-worst record in the NBA \u2014 rather than conveying it to New York as final payment for the original Kristaps Porzingis trade in January 2019.<\/p>\n
