{"id":254103,"date":"2025-08-27T21:04:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/254103\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T21:04:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:04:13","slug":"celtics-rookie-partook-in-incredible-celebration-of-basketball-and-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/254103\/","title":{"rendered":"Celtics rookie partook in incredible celebration of basketball and community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">MEDFORD, Mass. \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2025\/7\/12\/24465985\/hugo-gonzalez-boston-celtics-rookie-debut\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hugo Gonzalez<\/a> was relishing every second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Celtics rookie \u2013 still a few months away from his NBA debut \u2013 volunteered at a celebration of basketball and community in West Medford on Sunday, and spent his afternoon with kids who one day dream of being in his position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Gonzalez helped lead a basketball clinic at Dugger Park alongside Utah Jazz forward <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1734621&amp;xs=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fgoogle.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3DGeorges%2BNiang%2Bcelticsblog%26oq%3DGeorges%2BNiang%2Bcelticsblog%26gs_lcrp%3DEgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQRRg80gEIMTQ3MGowajeoAgCwAgA%26sourceid%3Dchrome%26ie%3DUTF-8\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Georges Niang<\/a>, who is from Lowell, Mass., and former NBA player Shabbaz Napier, who is from Roxbury, Mass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The trio hung out with hundreds of kids \u2013 playfully competing in 1-on-1 games, signing autographs, and snapping photos with anyone who asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">All the while, the city of Medford celebrated basketball and community in its 9th annual <a href=\"https:\/\/hoopsandhope.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hoops and Hope<\/a> event, a free, day-long basketball clinic that raises money for two causes: the <a href=\"https:\/\/wmcc.us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">West Medford Community Center<\/a>, a staple center in the community, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbf.org\/donors\/forms\/krystle-campbell-memorial-fund\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Krystle Campbell Memorial Fund<\/a>, a charitable foundation established in honor a Medford native who was killed in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Nearly 400 kids attended the event, which included a high school basketball tournament for both boys and girls, a men\u2019s college basketball tournament, and youth basketball clinics led by NBA players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Trent Headley, a West Medford native who is now a police officer in Malden, serves as Hoops and Hope\u2019s unofficial security person. Headley explained that the event is more than just a fundraiser: it\u2019s also an annual community gathering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cWe\u2019re a proud people from this neighborhood,\u201d said Headley. \u201cIt\u2019s a 100-year-old, middle-class, Black neighborhood for many, many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cWhen you grew up here, everybody touched you in some kind of way. We all knew each other\u2019s birthdays, and the older folks knew your parents. You got home and you came down to this park after school to play basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Andy Beck, a West Medford resident of more than 40 years who helps direct Hoops and Hope, said the involvement of NBA players has been huge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cOn a human level, it\u2019s wonderful to see them give up their time to give back and celebrate,\u201d Beck told CelticsBlog. \u201cWhen you see a 7-year-old looking you in the eye, just in awe of what you\u2019ve been able to accomplish, that has to make you feel great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And, having an active Celtics player in West Medford meant the world to longtime residents. Headley said that growing up, the kids would convene after weekend Celtics games and emulate what they saw on their television screens on the basketball courts of Dugger Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI wanted to be like Larry Bird,\u201d Headley said. \u201cYou\u2019d watch the games, and you\u2019d come right down to this park to practice the moves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside a special day in West Medford<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">On the sunny Sunday afternoon, Georges Niang, Shabbaz Nappier, and Hugo Gonzalez each helped lead basketball drills on the park\u2019s two outdoor courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Then, the trio of pros took time to answer questions from excited boys and girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Niang, who was acquired by the Celtics in July from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peachtreehoops.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta Hawks<\/a>, but traded to the Utah Jazz earlier this month, joked about his brief Celtics tenure as he recalled the many stops in his NBA journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Nappier recalled playing basketball for 12 hours a day in Roxbury\u2019s Washington Park, an upbringing he credits for propelling him toward the NBA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Gonzalez spoke to the kids about his experiences growing up in Spain and revealed that Pau Gasol and Rudy Fernandez were his heroes growing up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI was just \u2013 five, six years ago, like you guys,\u201d Gonzalez told the kids who sat eager-eyed on the concrete. He recounted his experiences as a kid playing at the Real Madrid academy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Gonzalez\u2019s participation and energy drew praise from the event\u2019s organizers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cHe\u2019s been wonderful,\u201d Beck said. \u201cIt\u2019s great for kids to see somebody from Spain and to hear him talk about his journey, which is a little bit different than kids who grew up in the US or in the inner-city or in West Medford. It\u2019s wonderful to see kids learning from people who speak different languages, come from different backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">One boy asked Gonzalez when he was planning on retiring, spurring laughter. Gonzalez smiled, but answered the question earnestly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cWhen you feel like you gave your all to the sport,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cI\u2019m 19, so I hope that\u2019s in a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Gonzalez\u2019s participation marked the first time that an active Celtics player has volunteered at Hoops and Hope. The event, unlike some community events NBA players participate in, did not involve financial incentives; Gonzalez simply wanted to hang out in the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cIt\u2019s really a tribute to Hugo to show up,\u201d Beck said. \u201cIt\u2019s great to see an active Celtics player \u2013 we\u2019ve had retired Celtic players \u2013 and I know how busy [the active players] are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">After the clinics ended, Gonzalez made sure to take photos and get to know many of the event\u2019s attendees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Many older residents who weren\u2019t partaking in the basketball festivities simply brought a lawn chair, watched, and relished the community atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Several pointed out just how engaged and warm Gonzalez was to each of the kids who approached him. One woman proclaimed that although she didn\u2019t know much about basketball, he was already the greatest draft pick ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Gonzalez would have to surpass countless Celtics greats to enter that conversation, but Headley took away one thing from observing the 19-year-old all afternoon: \u201cHe\u2019s gonna end up being a fan favorite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"duet--article--comments-link _1jdgahs9\" href=\"http:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/boston-celtics-news\/120937\/celtics-hugo-gonzalez-hoops-and-hope-medford#comments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">0 Comments<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MEDFORD, Mass. \u2013 Hugo Gonzalez was relishing every second.
