{"id":26843,"date":"2025-05-12T07:15:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T07:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/26843\/"},"modified":"2025-05-12T07:15:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T07:15:10","slug":"okc-thunder-roster-shows-off-depth-to-beat-denver-nuggets-in-game-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/26843\/","title":{"rendered":"OKC Thunder roster shows off depth to beat Denver Nuggets in Game 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2024\/10\/24\/thunder-schedule-dates-times-tv-streaming\/75705777007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thunder\u2019s Big Three<\/a> came through.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/basketball\/nba\/players\/alex-caruso\/697644\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Caruso<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/basketball\/nba\/players\/aaron-wiggins\/1133788\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron Wiggins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/basketball\/nba\/players\/cason-wallace\/1408195\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cason Wallace<\/a>, that is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Give each of them a game ball, because without the opportunistic play of the three benchmen, this is a 3-to-1, all-but-over series. Instead, it\u2019s a 2-2 split heading back to Oklahoma City after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/05\/11\/thunder-nuggets-score-nba-playoffs-game-4-live-updates-highlights-stats\/83569974007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thunder took Game 4 92-87<\/a> on Sunday afternoon in Denver.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the five-point win, Wiggins was a team-best plus-14 in his 16 minutes. Caruso and Wallace, who played 28 and 23 minutes respectively, were both a plus-12. Those were the three best plus-minus marks for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/sports\/thunder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thunder<\/a>. Single game plus-minuses can be deceptive, but nothing about those numbers was a fluke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After an overtime period in Game 3 and a quick turnaround ahead of Game 4, \u201cwe made a very intentional effort to use our depth today and get everybody going,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/05\/09\/nba-playoffs-thunder-vs-nuggets-aaron-gordon-nikola-jokic-okc-denver-fouls\/83546654007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/05\/09\/nba-playoffs-thunder-vs-nuggets-aaron-gordon-nikola-jokic-okc-denver-fouls\/83546654007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Thunder coach Mark Daigneault<\/a> said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\">CARLSON: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/05\/11\/okc-thunder-vs-denver-nuggets-score-nba-playoffs-game-4-nikola-jokic-stats\/83571218007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikola Jokic was off again in Game 4. This time, OKC Thunder didn&#8217;t squander opportunity.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aaron Wiggins saves basketball &#8230; playoff series for Thunder<\/p>\n<p>OKC\u2019s biggest advantage over Denver is its depth. On Sunday, the Thunder\u2019s bench outscored the Nuggets\u2019 bench 35-8.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a game where 3-pointers were so precious, Caruso, Wiggins and Wallace accounted for eight of the Thunder\u2019s 10 long-range makes. Combined, they shot 8 of 14 (57%) from 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rest of their teammates were 2 of 27 (7%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The triples from that bench trio were timely, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Down six midway through the third quarter, Wiggins buries a 3, assisted by Wallace, to cut Denver\u2019s lead in half.\u00a0Down six later in the third quarter, Wallace makes a 3-pointer to cut Denver\u2019s lead to three yet again. On OKC\u2019s next possession, Wiggins drills another 3.\u00a0Wallace, with 10:43 left in the game, hits a 3 to narrow Denver\u2019s lead to four points. Wallace then hits his third 3 \u2014\u00a0on as many attempts \u2014\u00a0to give the Thunder a two-point lead with 8:35 to play.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Caruso\u2019s 3-pointers (he was 2 of 5) came earlier in the game, but he was as clutch as could be in the fourth quarter. Doing classic Caruso things, like punching the ball out of Nikola Jokic\u2019s hands for a Thunder rebound and junking up Denver\u2019s offense by applying relentless pressure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were huge,\u201d Daigneault said of his bench. \u201cThey made huge shots and they gave us huge defense and toughness plays in that stretch of the game. Daigneault rode Caruso down the stretch in place of starter Lu Dort, who wasn\u2019t used at all in the fourth quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Caruso didn\u2019t make a shot in the fourth quarter, but he was instrumental in the Thunder outscoring the Nuggets 29-18 in the final frame.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The story of Sunday was the Thunder overcoming its clutch-time terrors. But OKC would not have made it to clutch time if not for the timely baskets and tenacious defense of Caruso, Wiggins and Wallace in the critical moments to close the third quarter and open the fourth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shai Gilgeous-Alexander brought the game home with nine points in the fourth and a team-high 25 overall, but he didn\u2019t get much offensive help from his main sidekicks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Williams played excellent defense but had to beg for a bucket. Same goes for Chet Holmgren. Combined, J-Dub and Chet shot 6 of 23, including 0 of 8 from 3-point range.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Thunder had to rely on a different Big Three in Game 4.
