Is this the secret to a slam dunk marriage?<\/p>\n

A question that started a lighthearted conversation on a podcast has sparked serious discourse online: What if marriages were like NBA contracts?<\/p>\n

Comedian, writer and actor Biniam Bizuneh<\/a> presented the concept on a previous episode<\/a> of \u201cFirsties Podcast\u201d when he half-jokingly noted that \u201c50% of marriages end in divorce or something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my thing, I think we should do. It sounds like a joke, but it actually is real,\u201d he began. \u201cI think we should do marriage like NBA contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explains that it would logistically look like having a four-year deal with clauses and an option to renew after the four years are up. <\/p>\n

When the contract expires, if you don\u2019t wish to renew, it\u2019s over with no fuss and no lawyers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t want to renew, be a free agent. You go off to the Mavs,\u201d Bizuneh quipped.<\/p>\n

But if the couple does decide to renew, re-sign at the end and \u201chave another little party.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat strengthens us, and because you know your term is coming up, there is a little bit more work you put in,\u201d he argued. \u201cBut if it\u2019s just like, well, it\u2019s forever, stop trying.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clip recently went viral<\/a>, prompting several jokes and commentary with men online.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are about to get traded against their will like Doncic,\u201d one commented, referencing the Dallas Mavericks\u2019 unexpected trade of Luka Doncic.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some noted that this isn\u2019t a new concept, with many pointing out, \u201cthat\u2019s just dating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can\u2019t go into a marriage all in with divorce not even being a thought in your mind, then you should never get married. Marriage is a sacred covenantal relationship, not a contract you can opt out of,\u201d someone else argued.<\/p>\n

When one women asked how this concept is any different from a pre-nuptial agreement, Bizuneh replied, \u201cIt\u2019s basically a prenup with stakes that can trigger the end of a marriage without a divorce. A prenup deals with assets, not the terms of behavior during the relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while Bizuneh isn\u2019t completely wrong about the statistic that almost 50 percent<\/a> of all marriages in the U.S. end in divorce or separation, it\u2019s slightly misleading. This number includes all marriages \u2014 first, second, third and so on.<\/p>\n

According to official publications released by the U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>, only about 30-35% of first marriages end in divorce.<\/p>\n

With each subsequent marriage, the probability of divorce increases. About 60% of second marriages end in divorce, and 73% of third marriages result in divorce.<\/p>\n
