In fact, Popovich officially stepped down as the team’s head coach with Mitch Johnson taking over his duties.

With coach Johnson at the helm, the Spurs are expected to make major strides during the 2025-26 NBA season. Keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at how well the front office has performed during the offseason.

Photo by Julio Aguilar/Getty ImagesBiggest additions to the San Antonio Spurs’ roster

It’s clear that the Spurs plan to build around Victor Wembanyama for the foreseeable future. After suffering a season-ending injury last season, Wembanyama is preparing for a major comeback.

With Wemby as the cornerstone, the Spurs already have multiple young prospects who can aid the French star in leading the team to glory.

However, Wembanyama’s biggest asset is none other than De’Aaron Fox. The Spurs have already re-signed Fox to a massive four-year extension. But is that it? Well, no.

De’Aaron Fox (Re-signed to a four-year deal)Bismack Biyombo (Re-signed to a one-year deal)Jordan McLaughlin (Re-signed to a one-year deal)Kelly Olynyk (Traded from Washington Wizards)Lindy Waters III (Signed a one-year deal)Luke Kornet (Signed a four-year deal)

Aside from Fox’s return, Luke Kornet’s addition should excite the Spurs fanbase. After all, even his former Boston Celtics teammate, Derrick White, was upset over Kornet’s departure.

Biggest departures from the San Antonio Spurs’ rosterPhoto by Alika Jenner/Getty Images

With the Spurs finally aiming to contend for an NBA Championship next season, it was obvious that the front office had to let go of a few players.

The most notable departure from the Spurs’ roster is none other than Chris Paul. After all, CP3 showed incredible resilience as he played all 82 games last season as a 39-year-old.

He also played a key role in guiding Wembanyama during his short stint with the franchise. On top of Paul’s exit, here are all the players who won’t be on the Spurs’ roster next season.

Chris Paul (Left as a free agent)Blake Wesley (Left as a free agent)Sandro Mamukelashvili (Left as a free agent)Malaki Branham (Traded to Washington Wizards)

With these moves, the Spurs’ 2025-26 lineup will be very different than last season, but it will be worth it if the team can once again become a perennial playoff team in the Western Conference.

The San Antonio Spurs will officially enter a new era during the 2025-26 NBA season.
