Image via: Juan Ocampo / NBAE via Getty Images The Los Angeles Clippers stepped into media day under a cloud of controversy, with questions swirling about alleged salary cap circumvention tied to Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement deal with a bankrupt California-based company. For weeks, speculation had grown louder, but Leonard finally addressed the issue head-on, dismissing the narrative as overblown and designed to stir drama.

Kawhi Leonard responds to allegations and calls reports “clickbait”

Facing a packed press conference on Monday, Kawhi Leonard rejected claims that the Clippers crossed NBA cap rules through his $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a sustainability-focused company that collapsed amid federal fraud charges.“I don’t read headlines or do conspiracy theories or anything like that, so. It’s about the season and what we’ve got ahead of us right now,” Leonard told reporters, via The Washington Post’s Ben Golliver. “The NBA is going to do their job. None of us did no wrongdoing. That’s it.”Leonard added that he welcomed the ongoing investigation and would not let the scrutiny derail his preparation for the upcoming season. “We invite the investigations. It’s not gonna be a distraction for me or the rest of the team.”The forward also pushed back on claims he benefited from a no-show job, calling the reports “clickbait” and noting that the deal was arranged years ago. He confirmed that Aspiration still owed him more than $7 million when the company filed for bankruptcy, saying, “Uh, no, but the company went belly up. It was fraud as everyone knows.”

Lawrence Frank defends Steve Ballmer and the Clippers’ integrity

Before Leonard’s comments, Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank opened media day with a strong defense of both the organization and owner Steve Ballmer. Frank acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but said the reports do not align with his experience.“We are glad there is an investigation. We welcome it. We appreciate that there’ll be a clear eye to look at these allegations, and we’re eager for the truth to come out,” Frank said. “The assumptions and conclusions that have been made are disappointing and upsetting. And we expect the investigation will show these allegations are wrong.”Frank also expressed personal frustration over how the situation has impacted Ballmer’s reputation. “I’m hurt for Steve. He’s one of the best people and most honorable people I’ve ever met. He does things the right way for the right reasons. And he constantly reminds us to stay on the right side of the rules.”The NBA, which has hired an outside firm to handle the investigation, has made clear it will need concrete evidence of circumvention before taking action. Potential penalties could include fines, voided contracts, or the loss of draft picks. As of now, both Leonard and the Clippers insist they remain confident in the process. Also Read: “I do see myself signing”- Kevin Durant eyes contract extension after leaving Phoenix Suns for Houston Rockets

Kawhi Leonard.
