UConn’s aggressive “junkyard dog” defense led to 33 team fouls and sent Michigan State to the foul line for 43 shots, of which the Spartans made 28. Trailing 44-33 at halftime, more than half of the Spartans’ points (17) came from the charity stripe.

“Obviously the fouls are an issue, they’ve been an issue in both (exhibition) games,” coach Dan Hurley said. “We fouled a lot, I’d say a lot of it was a lack of discipline and we’ve got to figure that out. Because I do think we’re playing hard, we’re much better defensively, even with Tarris (Reed) out, than we were last year, but we’ve got to figure out the fouling thing… I’ve got to coach better technique and discipline, we practice real hard but then when we get into the game, we’ve got to clean things up. Maybe I’ve got to start calling more fouls in practice.”

Playing only six minutes in the first half, Demary had a longer leash in the second and showed sparks of what he can provide with his physicality and playmaking ability as he finished with nine points, four rebounds and three assists, going a team-best plus-17 in 20 minutes.

“(Demary) definitely pressured and got after it defensively, and he shot the 3-ball well, too,” said senior captain Alex Karaban. “Everyone down the roster, we’re just gonna learn from the game. I think it’s a good first performance for him wearing a UConn jersey and I know he’s gonna continue to get better for us.”

With the foul-out limit extended to six for the exhibition, Demary was one of four Huskies to be whistled at least five times in the matchup.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="UConn guard Silas Demary Jr. (2) shoots over Michigan State guard Jeremy Fears Jr. (1) during the first half of an NCAA basketball game, Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Conn. After an Izzo timeout and a U-C-O-N-N ovation, Karaban pushed the lead further with his second triple of the evening.

“I think we’ve got a team that, when we’re healthy and as we develop throughout the year, we can be a championship-caliber team,” Hurley said. “We’ve got depth, the wings – again, Jayden Ross, if he gives us something like that when we’ve got this whole operation together player-wise…”

UConn, 2-0 in the preseason, will host the Chargers in the season-opener at Gampel Pavilion.

HARTFORD – Silas Demary Jr. looked the part in his first few minutes wearing a UConn uniform in…

[3723
2377,7,32511,217,926,925,2495,2680,41485,2679,33817,231,772,1544,4158,4159,3226,2681
0":"post-374331","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ncaa-basketball","8":"tag-alex-karaban","9":"tag-basketball","10":"tag-coen-carr","11":"tag-college-basketball","12":"tag-connecticut-news","13":"tag-ct-news","14":"tag-dan-hurley","15":"tag-hartford-courant","16":"tag-jeremy-fears","17":"tag-local-news","18":"tag-michigan-state-mens-basketball","19":"tag-ncaa","20":"tag-ncaa-basketball","21":"tag-ncaab","22":"tag-silas-demary-jr","23":"tag-solo-ball","24":"tag-tom-izzo","25":"tag-uconn-mens-basketball
["GET
