Skabelund on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025, in Layton.

LAYTON — “The scoreboard is a liar.”

That was how Northridge coach Cameron Wood assessed his 5A team’s spirited performance against powerful, highly-rated 6A foe Farmington on Thursday night.

Northridge played well enough to win but came up just short against the Phoenix in a narrow 57-54, nonregion home loss.

“We place a high premium on never backing down. We’re going to play Northridge basketball the whole game. We dictate how we play,” Wood said. “Our guys kept their confidence and kept believing in what we had set up in our game plan … stuck to it.”

Farmington senior guard Isaac Anderson threw a wrench into those plans, draining a 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining for what proved to be the game’s decisive points, delivering a win for the team ranked 11th by MaxPreps.

“They’re a great team and, for 32 minutes, our boys battled. This was a big step forward for our program,” Wood said. “It doesn’t matter who steps on the court with us; we’re ready to play.”

It didn’t look that way early when the Phoenix raced to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter behind 12 points by sophomore center Jack Layton.

Layton cooled off in the second stanza and had 14 points at the half, as Northridge figured things out and closed the gap to 31-29 at the break. He finished with a game-high 20 points.

“We saw on film, he likes to post up. It took us a while to get used to it, but then we focused on fronting him a little bit, got some weak-side help and forced some turnovers … that kind of changed the game for us,” Wood said.

Northridge senior forward Yahir Ferrer (at 6-foot-1) took the brunt of Layton’s assault, picking up four fouls in the first half while trying to guard the 6-foot-7 Farmington big man.

“He fought 42 hard. He’s undersized. I told him before the game, ‘if you’re going to get them, then go get them,’” Wood said. “He’s kind of our energizer; he’s the guy to get rebounds, the hustle points.”

With Ferrer on the bench, senior guard Theo Roach stepped into the spotlight, scoring 15 of his team-high 19 points in the first half.

“In our system, whoever’s open, we’re shooting it. He got us started early until others found their rhythm. We play a conceptual brand of basketball and he was a facilitator for us,” Wood said.

A good halftime adjustment led to a 16-6 third quarter for the Knights and they led 45-37 after three.

Junior guard Jace Whitear scored 11 points in the first 4 minutes, 34 seconds of the period as Northridge nudged ahead, and neither team lit the scoreboard the last 3:26 of the quarter.

“It’s really just my guys; they open up drive lanes for me…sometimes you’re feeling it,” Whitear said. “It’s easy when you have a lot of unselfish players who just want to get the ball in the basket; they don’t care if it’s theirs or mine. Theo had the big first half, but he decided to not be selfish and kept passing me the ball.”

Whitear had 16 points on Thursday, including a pair of 3-pointers. While stats weren’t immediately available after the game, he also nabbed several key defensive rebounds.

“Any way I can; rebounds, assists, points. It doesn’t matter to me … trying to get the win for the team,” Whitear said. “I try to score at all three levels; much harder to guard that way.”

The scoring drought for the Knights at the end of the third quarter was a harbinger of things to come. Farmington opened the final frame on a 17-4 run, taking a 54-49 edge.

“They tightened up defensively; it was hard to get clean shots. Credit to them,” Wood said. “We got good shots; we just didn’t hit them.”

Junior guard Jett Williams scored Northridge’s only four points during the Farmington run and also totaled double digits with 11 points overall.

Still not ready to give in, Northridge drew even on two Roach free throws with 1:39 remaining and a 3-pointer from senior guard Daniel Sunkuli at the 55-second mark.

Farmington (6-2) ran the clock down and Anderson splashed home the game-winner with 25 seconds left.

Northridge (7-4) had a good look on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds, and a shot at the buzzer was blocked.

“We knew what we had to do. We’re as good as this team and can compete with anyone,” Whitear said. “We had some unlucky shots and they hit some big-time shots. That last shot at the end was just a really good shot.”

After the game in the locker room, Wood exhorted his team to come to work at practice on Friday and push through the disappointment.

“We got some good wins early this season, and a couple of tough losses, so obviously coming into today, this was a big one to see where we stand against some of the top teams,” Wood said.

DAVIS 61, D’IBERVILLE-MS 40

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Davis trailed 15-14 after one quarter, then outscored D’Iberville (Biloxi, Mississippi) 47-25 the rest of the way for a win Thursday morning at the KSA Events Holiday Tournament.

Dilan Petersen led all scorers with 15 points for Davis (6-3), shooting 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Cameron Brower added 12 points and Bode Sparrow scored 10. Tradon Bessenger made both of his 3-point attempts on his way to eight points and corralled nine rebounds. The Darts shot 8 of 13 from distance.

SPRING MILLS-WV 56, DAVIS 44

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Davis fell to Spring Mills (Martinsburg, WV) in the Darts’ second game Thursday at the KSA tournament. Rock Speredon added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
