Robert Sabo for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>The rookie\u2019s late heroics were spoiled by Paolo Banchero\u2019s game-winner at the buzzer, but they still left an impression.<\/p>\n<p>If the Nets are fortunate, D\u00ebmin\u2019s 18-point outburst is another sign that the Russian will live up to the high expectations the organization has for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the first time we\u2019ve seen him in the fourth quarter letting it fly and the ball going in,\u2019\u2019 coach Jordi Fern\u00e1ndez said of the 6-foot-8 point guard. \u201cEvery time he shoots it, I think it\u2019s going in. \u2026 Credit to him for having [the] conviction to shoot it and make them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Nets are counting on more of those types of performances, and Wednesday was not the first time D\u00ebmin was able to tune out a rough first three quarters to deliver late.<\/p>\n<p>After the game, D\u00ebmin credited his ability to shake off a poor performance during a game to remaining present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always felt comfortable growing up in these types of situations,\u2019\u2019 D\u00ebmin said. \u201cIf I have a rough game, at the end of the game, it\u2019s easier for me to get the energy out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He showed no fear against Orlando as he delivered again and again at Barclays Center, with the Nets looking for a second consecutive home win following their victory over Denver.<\/p>\n<p>When the Nets surprised much of the league by taking D\u00ebmin at No. 8, with their first lottery pick in 15 years, some doubted whether he\u2019d be able to shoot well enough to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>There was little question about his playmaking ability, as he was considered arguably the top passer in the draft.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38135456\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/forces-overtime-three-point-basket-118474219.jpg\" alt=\"Egor Demin (8) forces overtime with this three point basket during the second half when the Brooklyn Nets played the Orlando Magic Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.\" class=\"wp-image-38135456\"  \/>Egor Demin hits a 3-pointer to force overtime in the Nets\u2019 eventual loss to the Magic on Jan. 7, 2026. Robert Sabo for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>His vision remains unquestioned, but the jumper can still come and go.<\/p>\n<p>What is undeniable, though, is D\u00ebmin seems to have a knack for the big moment.<\/p>\n<p>That, according to Fern\u00e1ndez, will continue to be valuable.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFollow all the basketball buzz in Brooklyn\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Nets by Brian Lewis, exclusively on Sports+.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpecial players can do those things,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez said of D\u00ebmin putting his struggles from earlier in the game behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing him now as a 19-year-old, as a rookie, he\u2019s able to make shots in the fourth quarter,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez said. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna get harder because teams will know and probably will put more pressure [on him], but he\u2019s smart and he\u2019ll use that pressure against teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And there is plenty of room for D\u00ebmin to grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot we can work on with him,\u2019\u2019 Fern\u00e1ndez said. \u201cThe ceiling is very high for the player we believe he is, but something we cannot teach is those moments. And he has that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Porter Jr. was added to the injury report Thursday for Friday\u2019s game against the Clippers at Barclays Center. He was listed as probable with knee soreness. The Nets have lost four of five since winning a season-high three in a row and begin a three-game road trip Sunday in Memphis.
