TEMPLE assistant coach Bill Courtney has died \u201csuddenly\u201d at the age of 55.<\/p>\n

Emotional tributes are being paid to the Virginia<\/a> native, who coached Cornell between 2010 and 2016.<\/p>\n

Temple confirmed Courtney\u2019s passing but have not provided details of his death.<\/p>\n

Coach Adam Fisher said: \u201cI am shocked and heartbroken by the tragic news and passing of my close friend Bill Courtney.<\/p>\n

\u201cBill made such a big impact on our program in such a short time. He was one of the most respected coaches in the country \u2014 thoughtful, prepared and deeply committed to the game and to winning the right way.<\/p>\n

Temple athletic director Arthur Johnson added: \u201cI was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of coach Bill Courtney.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the short time that he has been part of the Temple family, I saw the impact that he had on our program with the joy that exuded from him on and off the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will be missed by his immediate family, his Temple basketball family, and the greater basketball community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Courtney joined Temple in June last year after spending five seasons at Miami<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The much-loved coach made the NCAA<\/a> tournament three times in Florida<\/a> and spent the end of last season as Miami\u2019s interim coach.<\/p>\n

His coaching career also included stops at American, Bowling Green, George Mason, Providence, Virginia, Virginia Tech and DePaul.<\/p>\n

Courtney enjoyed a strong collegiate playing career at Bucknell and graduated in 1992.<\/p>\n

American Conference commissioner Tim Pernetti said Courtney made a \u201cprofound impact\u201d as a coach, and the lasting effect he had on student-athletes will be his \u201cultimate legacy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Cornell said Courtney was a \u201cbright light\u201d and will be \u201cgreatly missed\u201d.<\/p>\n

Harvard coach Tommy Amaker called Courtney \u201ca tremendous coach, a trusted colleague, and an exemplary ambassador for college basketball\u201d.<\/p>\n
