New York can exhale \u2014 at least for now.<\/p>\n

Why? Jalen Brunson appears to have dodged a major injury scare after rolling his right ankle yet again on Wednesday night. That\u2019s why.<\/p>\n

The Knicks star exited midway through the first quarter against the Sacramento Kings with what looked like a worrying non-contact ankle injury \u2014 the third time in a year he\u2019s hurt the same ankle.<\/p>\n

Without their captain, New York faded badly and fell 112-101, but the final score was almost beside the point.<\/p>\n

Brunson\u2019s absence was glaring. Averaging 28.9 points per game, the All-NBA guard is the engine of this Knicks team \u2014 and once he went down, the offence lost its rhythm against a motivated Kings side.<\/p>\n

History made the moment tense. Brunson suffered a Grade 1 sprain to the same ankle earlier this season, missing about a week, and last March, he was sidelined for nearly a month after another setback.<\/p>\n

This time, though, early signs are encouraging.<\/p>\n

According to The Athletic, Brunson walked out of the locker room under his own power, without a boot or crutches \u2014 a small but significant relief for Knicks fans holding their breath.<\/p>\n

That alone suggests the injury may not be the nightmare scenario it initially appeared. The Knicks are expected to run further tests on Thursday, but avoiding crutches is a major positive.<\/p>\n

New York is 25-10 and sitting second in the East, right behind the red-hot Detroit Pistons, and with the conference tighter than expected, Brunson\u2019s availability could make or break their momentum.<\/p>\n
