{"id":551216,"date":"2026-01-21T15:45:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T15:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/551216\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T15:45:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T15:45:15","slug":"grayson-allen-hit-with-infamous-ted-cruz-comparison-by-nets-announcer-during-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/551216\/","title":{"rendered":"Grayson Allen hit with infamous Ted Cruz comparison by Nets announcer during game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite securing the victory for his team on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/clutchpoints.com\/nba\/phoenix-suns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phoenix Suns<\/a> guard <a href=\"https:\/\/clutchpoints.com\/nba\/players\/b65c097a\/grayson-allen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grayson Allen<\/a> found himself at the receiving end of a brutal Ted Cruz comparison by Brooklyn Nets broadcaster Tim Capstraw.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clutchpoints.com\/nba\/phoenix-suns\/suns-news-dillon-brooks-ex-grizzlies-teammate-makes-all-star-declaration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Midway through Monday&#8217;s game<\/a>, when the Suns were leading the Nets 45-28, the YES Network broadcast showed Allen early in the second quarter on the television screens, when Capstraw claimed that Allen looked like Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/suns-guard-draws-ted-cruz-comparison-during-win-over-nets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dropped the infamous comparison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrayson Allen \u2013 I can\u2019t look at him and not think of Ted Cruz,\u201d Capstraw said. \u201cI\u2019m not Mr. Politics or anything. I don\u2019t want to get into that. But that guy, that\u2019s a young Ted Cruz to me.\u201d Ryan Ruocco also joined in and claimed that Capstraw&#8217;s comparison was \u201cspot on\u201d and further noted that Senator Cruz should \u201cfeel good\u201d about the comparison.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz himself is aware of the online trend of his striking resemblance to Allen. Back in 2017, he went viral on social media after responding to a question from Deadspin about showing proof of Cruz playing basketball, to which he had responded with an image of Allen in a Duke Blue Devils uniform.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the infamous comparison, the 30-year-old finished the game on a positive note, scoring 14 points and completing eight passes in 30 minutes, helping the Suns beat the Nets 126-117. The rest of the match also saw some impressive performances from the other Suns players, including Dillon Brooks, leading the scoreboard with 27 points, while Devin Booker contributed 24.
