WASHINGTON (AP) – An NBA game, an NHL contest and dozens of college basketball games across a wide swath of the country have been reshuffled because of an approaching major winter storm.<\/a><\/p>\n

The storm<\/a> that meteorologists say could rival the damage of a major hurricane<\/a> is expected to bring snow, ice and frigid temperatures from New Mexico to New England starting Friday. Forecasters warn the weather system could bring catastrophic damage, widespread power outages and bitter cold.<\/p>\n

In the NBA, the start time of the Washington Wizards\u2019 game at the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday was moved to noon.<\/p>\n

The NHL said Saturday\u2019s game in Nashville between the Predators and the Utah Mammoth would start two hours earlier.<\/p>\n

The Atlantic Coast Conference moved up the start times for three men\u2019s basketball games on Saturday: Wake Forest at Duke, North Carolina at Virginia, and Virginia Tech at Louisville. On the women\u2019s side, Wake Forest\u2019s home game against Virginia Tech and Virginia\u2019s home game against N.C. State were shifted from Sunday to Saturday, while North Carolina moved up its Sunday game against Syracuse to a noon EST start.<\/p>\n

Xavier moved up its start time for Saturday\u2019s men\u2019s game against St. John\u2019s by one hour, and the Xavier women\u2019s team made it a doubleheader, moving its home game against Georgetown from Sunday to Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

In the Big 12, the Oklahoma State men\u2019s game against No. 9 Iowa State was moved up by one hour on Saturday, while the LSU at Arkansas men\u2019s matchup in the Southeastern Conference was pushed several hours earlier. On the women\u2019s side, Arkansas\u2019 home game against Texas was postponed to Feb. 19.<\/p>\n

A pair of women\u2019s games involving ranked teams also had scheduling changes. No. 1 UConn\u2019s game at Seton Hall was moved from Sunday to Saturday, and No. 14 Baylor\u2019s home contest against Houston went from Sunday to Tuesday. Also, Cincinnati shifted its women\u2019s game to a noon start Saturday against Arizona State.<\/p>\n

The number of states where college games were being adjusted showed the large path of the approaching storm<\/a>. The forecast comes exactly a year after another storm forced postponements across U.S. sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Sun Belt Conference preemptively shook up its women\u2019s basketball schedule<\/a>, moving around the start times on several games from Thursday through Saturday. The American Athletic Conference also adjusted its weekend men\u2019s and women\u2019s schedules, moving some games up to Friday.<\/p>\n

North Carolina Central postponed two men\u2019s and two women\u2019s games scheduled to be played from Thursday through Monday in Durham, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

Appalachian State moved up its men\u2019s home game with Louisiana-Lafayette to Thursday morning and Marshall made its home game against Louisiana-Monroe a noon Thursday tipoff.<\/p>\n

Middle Tennessee State men\u2019s basketball moved its Conference USA showdown with Jacksonville State from Saturday to Friday evening.<\/p>\n

Tennessee\u2019s swim meet at Georgia and the South Carolina Upstate women\u2019s basketball game at Longwood were pushed to Friday from Saturday.<\/p>\n

Other women\u2019s games moved up several hours Saturday included No. 20 Princeton at Brown and North Florida at Eastern Kentucky, along with men\u2019s games involving Towson at North Carolina A&T and Texas State at James Madison.<\/p>\n

Rice adjusted tipoff times for its men\u2019s and women\u2019s home games. The men\u2019s game against Tulsa originally scheduled for Sunday was changed to Saturday. The women\u2019s game game against Tulane on Saturday was moved up by one hour.<\/p>\n

George Mason\u2019s women\u2019s game against Richmond was moved up three hours to 11 a.m. Sunday, with no fans permitted to attend.<\/p>\n

Major League Baseball\u2019s Texas Rangers canceled their annual Fan Fest scheduled for Saturday because of the forecast for frozen precipitation in North Texas and \u201cin the interest of safety for players, fans, and employees.\u201d<\/p>\n
