ROY \u2014 Friday\u2019s Region 5 boys basketball game featured two teams trending in drastically different directions.<\/p>\n

Roy had lost two of its last three contests while Fremont was on a three-game winning streak. That course seemed destined to continue when the Silverwolves led by a dozen points midway through the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

But the Royals rallied for 12 straight points to end regulation and sent the game into overtime, where senior forward Jake Hamblin\u2019s rebound bucket with 26.7 seconds left gave Roy a 60-59 lead that stuck in a stunning comeback victory over the Silverwolves.<\/p>\n

In what may have seemed like the longest 4 1\/2 seconds in Roy basketball history, the Royals came out of a timeout with 31.2 on the clock with Boston Greenhalgh inbounding, trailing 59-58.<\/p>\n

Hamblin takes it from there:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Fremont was expecting the ball was going back to Boston. Coach (Ryan Hannah) drew up a great play of a back screen for me. Boston threw the inbound pass to the basket. I was supposed to catch it and dunk it, but I caught it too early and the shot came up short,\u201d Hamblin said. \u201cI scrambled and got the ball and hit a little floating fadeaway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fremont (6-12, 4-3 Region 5) held what looked like an insurmountable 55-43 lead on a Cam Campbell free throw with 3:50 left before the Royals mounted their improbable comeback.<\/p>\n

Following a timeout, the Royals (13-5, 5-2) came out of the huddle with their marching orders from Hannah.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoach told us we had to dig deep and work hard,\u201d Hamblin said. \u201cDon\u2019t give up and keep fighting back. We just wanted it more than Fremont.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roy senior forward Jesse Jones drew a foul on a 3-point attempt with 2:55 remaining and converted the three free throws to make it 55-46.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw him coming hard; he landed in my zone and I got fouled and stepped up there and made all three of them,\u201d Jones said. \u201cOnce I hit those, you could feel the momentum change with the crowd and the whole team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones scored eight points during the 12-point run, including a 3-pointer and a rebound basket in the closing seconds that sent the game into overtime.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw a shot go up; I\u2019d been crashing the boards all night and it came up short,\u201d Jones said. \u201cI grabbed it; came down strong, turned and put a tough one up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t shoot a lot of threes, but when I do, I feel confident,\u201d Jones added.<\/p>\n

Jones scored 13 points, including 4 of 5 from the free-throw line, and pulled down an astonishing 17 rebounds for a double-double. Hamblin finished with eight points and six rebounds, one of particular note.<\/p>\n

For most of the first quarter, it was all Greenhalgh, who netted 13 of his 22 points on the night for Roy, thus why Fremont might have expected the key overtime play to go to him.<\/p>\n

Roy took a 21-16 lead after the first quarter but gave it all away when Fremont won the second stanza 18-7 to go up 34-28 at the break.<\/p>\n

Junior guard Lincoln Britt opened the second quarter for the Royals with a floater, giving them a 23-16 edge, before Fremont scored 11 consecutive points in a little more than 3 minutes to take a 27-23 advantage.<\/p>\n

Fremont junior guard Easton Hansen knocked down his second 3-pointer of the first half, giving the Silverwolves a 24-23 lead with 5:25 left, followed by junior guard Kourt Duft\u2019s third trey, some 55 seconds later.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you see a couple fall \u2026 we\u2019re a good shooting team; really unselfish, so if we move the ball around, we trust each other to hit good shots,\u201d Hansen said.<\/p>\n

The Silverwolves raised the margin to nine points after three quarters, 47-38, then as many as 14 points (52-38) early in the fourth period before Roy went on its roll.<\/p>\n

\u201cHome crowd and a good team; it\u2019s hard to hold a lead for that long,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cWe knew they\u2019d go on a run, but hoped it wouldn\u2019t be like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hansen scored 22 points on the night, including 4 of 4 from the free-throw line, and Duft had 12 on four first-half 3-pointers. Senior forward Zeb Whetton checked in with five points and nine rebounds for Fremont.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt came down to we just had to make plays when it mattered,\u201d Jones said. \u201cEverybody had to do their part and step up a little bit more and contribute \u2026 continue to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n
