For teams living a bit lower in the standings, the deadline offers a shot at one last transactional closing kick that can separate them from the middle of the pack, avoid the play-in tournament and maybe even land home-court advantage in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>For others, it\u2019s a chance to keep matriculating the ball down the field on your in-process rebuilding project by trying to snag some future picks or prospects on the outskirts of larger, more present-tense-focused deals. And if you\u2019ve got nothing much else going on, maybe you can at least cut down your luxury tax bill and save your owner a few million bucks. It is a <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6976274\/2026\/01\/16\/giannis-antetokounmpo-bucks-season-lost\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:lost;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">lost<\/a> team in desperate need of a dramatic infusion of talent \u2014 and, of course, of a dramatic improvement in the health and structural integrity of Giannis\u2019 calves \u2014 just to try to squeak past the likes of the Hawks, Bulls and Hornets into a play-in spot. That completely defensible ideology has left the Bucks with one first-round pick available to trade (either 2031 or 2032, but not both), with no movable second-round picks, with an immovable $22.5 million dead money roster charge on their books every year through 2030 from the Dame stretch, with only four players (Antetokounmpo, Turner, Kuzma and Bobby Portis) making more than $5.2 million this season, and with no young prospects of note aside from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/nba\/article\/who-is-ryan-rollins-the-bucks-might-have-found-a-breakout-star-to-complement-giannis-antetokounmpo-181103503.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:21;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:pleasant-surprise guard Ryan Rollins;cpos:21;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">pleasant-surprise guard Ryan Rollins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not exactly a bumper crop of assets. More of a bummer crop, actually.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s still enough to shake some action. Maybe the markets for Kuzma and Portis, which Milwaukee has reportedly <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopshype.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2026\/01\/16\/nba-intel-ja-morant-jaren-jackson-jr-anthony-davis-kyrie-irving-peyton-watson-jonathan-kuminga\/88210035007\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:22;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:been;cpos:22;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">been<\/a> <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/marcstein.substack.com\/p\/wednesday-morning-confidential-the\" data-i13n=\"cpos:23;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:gauging;cpos:23;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">gauging<\/a> for weeks, are more robust than we think. Maybe Horst can turn that one tradable first into multiple picks, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/report-suns-stockpile-draft-picks-in-deal-with-jazz-amid-reported-interest-in-jimmy-butler-trade-003427224.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:24;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:like the Suns did last year;cpos:24;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">like the Suns did last year<\/a>; maybe that gets the Bucks in the mix for someone like Miles Bridges, in whom they\u2019ve <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6993002\/2026\/01\/23\/nba-trade-rumors-karl-anthony-towns-knicks\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:25;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reportedly shown interest;cpos:25;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reportedly shown interest<\/a>, and for whom Charlotte\u2019s reportedly seeking a first (if not more).<\/p>\n<p>[<a class=\"link \" href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/@YahooNBA\" data-i13n=\"slk:Subscribe to Yahoo Sports NBA on YouTube;cpos:26;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Subscribe to Yahoo Sports NBA on YouTube;slk:Subscribe to Yahoo Sports NBA on YouTube;cpos:26;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Subscribe to Yahoo Sports NBA on YouTube<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Milwaukee instead goes the other way, shedding whichever vets it can (Gary Trent Jr., Gary Harris, Cole Anthony, Amir Coffey) for whatever second-rounders they might return, steering into the skid of another month and a half or so without Giannis in pursuit of a plunge down the standings. Remember: While the Hawks are in line to get the better one of the Bucks\u2019 and Pelicans\u2019 2026 first-round picks, thanks to the trade that landed Derik Queen in New Orleans, the Bucks will still get the worse pick \u2026 which could still be a very good pick if both the Pelicans and Bucks stink.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe, in what\u2019s projected to be one of the strongest top-of-the-draft classes in recent memory, that lands the Bucks a high lottery pick who might help revitalize the franchise, a la VJ Edgecombe in Philly.\u00a0 Maybe that kind of shot in the arm strengthens the case Horst can make this offseason, when he offers Giannis the four-year, $275 million maximum-salaried contract extension he becomes eligible to receive on Oct. 1 \u2014 the kind of deal that would hopefully convince the two-time MVP to scrap all this \u201cnew home\u201d talk in favor of staying in Milwaukee for good.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Giannis doesn\u2019t find that case particularly compelling and decides against signing that extension. In which case: Well, Horst did everything he could, and now it\u2019s time to sift through the best offers everyone can make when there\u2019s more cap space, more draft picks, more opportunities \u2014 more, more, more.<\/p>\n<p>Or, maybe, all this is moot. Maybe Wednesday\u2019s \u201cwe\u2019re open for business\u201d report nets an offer good enough for the Bucks to take right now \u2014 and maybe the balance of power in the NBA shifts drastically, dramatically, immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of \u201cmaybes.\u201d That\u2019s why we\u2019re all talking about you guys, Doc, and why everybody\u2019s waiting on you. Sorry for the distraction.<\/p>\n<p>Three and a half months ago, with Jayson Tatum in the early stages of his recovery from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, the C\u2019s trade deadline path seemed clear. That\u2019s the version of the team that led owner James Dolan to go on New York radio and proclaim that the Knicks <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/knicks-owner-james-dolan-want-165624725.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:56;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cshould win the Finals\u201d;cpos:56;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cshould win the Finals\u201d<\/a> \u2014 a version of the team that, frankly, hadn\u2019t been seen often, or at all, since mid-December.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The question: Does Leon Rose believe that team is well and truly back, and sticking around? Is the devil the Knicks know \u2014 KAT, with all his flaws, still leading the league in rebounding and playing hard despite errant shooting and <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7003447\/2026\/01\/28\/knicks-best-karl-anthony-towns-bench\/?source=emp_shared_article\" data-i13n=\"cpos:64;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:decreasing minutes;cpos:64;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">decreasing minutes<\/a>; Bridges, with his tendency to lean away from contact and disappear at times, still in the midst of the best all-around season of his career; Anunoby, his handle sometimes shaky and his aggression intermittent, still one of the premier 3-and-D+ players in the NBA \u2014 better than the devil they don\u2019t?<\/p>\n<p>The glass-half-full view: Toronto\u2019s flirting with a 50-win pace, blowing away preseason expectations, thanks to an All-NBA-caliber two-way performance by Scottie Barnes; strong complementary scoring and playmaking from Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley; a tone-shifting bench led by Sandro Mamukelashvili and Jamal Shead; and the <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/cleaningtheglass.com\/stats\/league\/summary\" data-i13n=\"cpos:66;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NBA\u2019s No. 6 defense;cpos:66;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">NBA\u2019s No. 6 defense<\/a>. That\u2019s a damn good foundation \u2014 one that should allow the Raptors to return to the playoffs for the first time in four years, and should give them a real chance to advance beyond the opening round for the first time since 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The more pessimistic view, though, comes on a night like Wednesday, when Barnes, Barrett and Quickley shoot a combined 12-for-35 from the floor, when Toronto gets outscored by 21 points from the 3-point line, and when the Raps score a dismal <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/game\/nyk-vs-tor-0022500675\/box-score?period=2ndHalf&amp;type=advanced\" data-i13n=\"cpos:67;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:82 points per 100 possessions in the second half;cpos:67;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">82 points per 100 possessions in the second half<\/a> \u2014 some real Process Sixers\/7-59 Bobcats business. It\u2019s fair to wonder if that\u2019s a recipe for regular-season wins, but an early playoff exit.<\/p>\n<p>Which is probably why, in recent weeks, Toronto has been mentioned in connection with virtually every big name that\u2019s come on the trade block, with multiple reports suggesting the Raptors have looked to gauge the markets for Quickley, Barrett, Poeltl and reserve wing Ochai Agbaji, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The Raptors were <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/marcstein.substack.com\/p\/the-jake-fischer-latest-is-the-nba?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=184649723&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=282&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email\" data-i13n=\"cpos:78;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reportedly;cpos:78;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reportedly<\/a> at least somewhat in on Anthony Davis (before his injury) and Ja Morant (before his injury). They <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6993002\/2026\/01\/23\/nba-trade-rumors-karl-anthony-towns-knicks\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:79;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reportedly remain in;cpos:79;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reportedly remain in<\/a> on Domantas Sabonis \u2014 <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamziller.com\/sacramento-kings-tank-keegan-murray-domantas-sabonis\/?ref=good-morning-its-basketball-newsletter\" data-i13n=\"cpos:80;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201ca man increasingly out of time,\u201d;cpos:80;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">\u201ca man increasingly out of time,\u201d<\/a> as Tom Ziller recently described him, for his inability to protect the rim and space the floor, but also a high-IQ offensive connector who would immediately be Toronto\u2019s best playmaker. He would also give the Raps an actual center-sized center, which they\u2019ve largely lacked with Poeltl missing significant time due to a back injury, leading to Collin Murray-Boyles \u2014 an absolute ace of a defender, but also a 6-foot-7 rookie \u2014 punching up in weight class at the 5.<\/p>\n<p>Sabonis wouldn\u2019t solve the shooting problem, though, and finding someone who would is probably going to cost a pretty penny; the Pelicans are said to be looking for a <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/marcstein.substack.com\/p\/tuesday-night-confidential-my-nba?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=186037697&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=282&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email\" data-i13n=\"cpos:81;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cDesmond Bane-type offer\u201d;cpos:81;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">\u201cDesmond Bane-type offer\u201d<\/a> to even consider entertaining calls about Trey Murphy III. The Raptors do have all of their own first-round picks to deal, plus at least six tradable seconds, according to <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/news\/_\/id\/3244\/2026-eastern-conference-trade-deadline-primer\" data-i13n=\"cpos:82;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Keith Smith of Spotrac;cpos:82;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Keith Smith of Spotrac<\/a>. Are they willing to pony up that kind of package to try to pry loose the sort of wing who could help decongest that half-court offense? Just a game out of second in the East, do they feel like the time is right to push some of their chips to the middle for that kind of swing? Hell\u00a0\u2014 do they decide to push all of them in, getting in on the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes in pursuit of a bet-on-yourself deal reminiscent of the trade that made Kawhi Leonard a short-term Canadian and the Raptors all-time champions?<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>More likely, the Raptors decide to slow-play things, nibbling on the edges in search of a deal that returns a backup big \u2014 they\u2019ve <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopshype.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2026\/01\/28\/nba-intel-giannis-antetokounmpo-domantas-sabonis-lakers-celtics-knicks-hawks-bulls-cavaliers-timberw\/88401592007\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:83;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:been connected with;cpos:83;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">been connected with<\/a> Missi and Phoenix\u2019s Nick Richards \u2014 while offloading enough salary (like Agbaji\u2019s $6.4 million) to duck below the luxury tax line, which they\u2019re currently <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/tax\" data-i13n=\"cpos:84;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:less than $1 million over;cpos:84;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">less than $1 million over<\/a>. (<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nba\/article\/raptors-prepared-to-be-patient-with-webster-leading-over-the-long-term\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:85;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sportsnet\u2019s Michael Grange;cpos:85;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Sportsnet\u2019s Michael Grange<\/a> recently called such a move a \u201cseeming certainty.\u201d) In a market where there might not be many difference-makers moving, though, a Raptors team that is pretty good with young talent and all of its draft picks could be in position to upend our expectations once again.<\/p>\n<p>The Kings aren\u2019t the worst team in the NBA at the moment, but they might be the most purposeless.<\/p>\n<p>The Wizards have pulled together a young core of Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington and Tre Johnson, reorienting their salary structure to have significant cap space this summer even after trading for Trae Young. The Nets took five prospective playmakers in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft, got paid an unprotected 2032 first-round pick to take on Michael Porter Jr. and let him cook his way into All-Star consideration, and are developing an identity under Jordi Fernandez.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Jazz have Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George, Ace Bailey and (when healthy) Walker Kessler, and they\u2019re playing the game to try to get themselves one more bite at the top-of-the-lottery apple. The Pacers only stink because Tyrese Haliburton can\u2019t play right now. The Pelicans stink for myriad reasons, and may well do so into the future, but they drafted Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen to go with Trey Murphy III, Herb Jones and, from time to time, Zion Williamson.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably too charitable to say that all of these bad teams know what they\u2019re doing, but you get the sense, at least, that they know what they\u2019re trying to do.<\/p>\n<p>What are the Kings trying to do? What\u2019s the goal of what Sacramento \u2014 12-36, with the NBA\u2019s <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/cleaningtheglass.com\/stats\/league\/summary\" data-i13n=\"cpos:87;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fourth-worst offense and third-worst defense;cpos:87;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">fourth-worst offense and third-worst defense<\/a> \u2014 has put together, under the eighth head coach and fifth lead front office executive of Vivek Ranadiv\u00e9\u2019s checkered ownership tenure?<\/p>\n<p>Job No. 1, as general manager Scott Perry <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/47530219\/can-sacramento-kings-fixed-next-trade-deadline\" data-i13n=\"cpos:88;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:recently told ESPN\u2019s Anthony Slater;cpos:88;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">recently told ESPN\u2019s Anthony Slater<\/a>, is to \u201cget younger as a team\u201d \u2026 which, considering the five highest-paid players on his roster are between 27 and 36 years old, seems like a recipe for a fire sale. (It\u2019s at least kind of funny that the Sacramento player who reportedly has the frothiest market \u2014 ace-defending fourth-year guard Keon Ellis, about whom <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/marcstein.substack.com\/p\/tuesday-night-confidential-my-nba?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=186037697&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=282&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email\" data-i13n=\"cpos:89;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Marc Stein recently reported;cpos:89;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Marc Stein recently reported<\/a> \u201can estimated 14 teams have registered varying degrees of trade interest\u201d \u2014 just turned 26 and could absolutely be part of a longer-term solution in Sacramento \u2026 if it wasn\u2019t for the part where Doug Christie only plays him like 18 minutes per game.)<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s reasonable to wonder, though, what kind of markets there realistically might be for the likes of Sabonis, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Malik Monk and Dennis Schr\u00f6der \u2014 all of whom have guaranteed money on the books next year (or, in the case of LaVine, a $49 million player option that seems highly likely to get picked up).<\/p>\n<p>All of those players have skills that could play up in the right context: Sabonis\u2019 passing, rebounding and interior scoring; LaVine\u2019s high-volume 3-point shooting; DeRozan\u2019s seemingly unyielding and ageless ability to create his own shot and drop 20 from the midrange; Monk\u2019s instant-offense scoring and 3-point shooting off the bench; Schr\u00f6der\u2019s quickness, ability to get downhill and play tough two-way basketball, as he did for Detroit last season during their playoff series against the Knicks. If sticker shock results in paltry offers coming back, though, will Perry just bite the bullet and take whatever picks and projects he can get, betting on his front office being able to do a better job of evaluating young talent in the draft, and of Christie being able to do a better job of developing it, than their predecessors?<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>And if what winds up coming back is of a significantly lower wattage than what goes out \u2014 if those multiple former All-Stars mostly bring back a passel of late-first and second-round picks \u2014 will Ranadiv\u00e9 really be willing to keep his hands off the wheel and let Perry steer Sacramento through what could, and frankly should \u2014 be a protracted rebuild?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, he&#8217;s passionate about his team,\u201d Perry <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/47530219\/can-sacramento-kings-fixed-next-trade-deadline\" data-i13n=\"cpos:90;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told Slater;cpos:90;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">told Slater<\/a>. \u201cBut we are aligned on the vision, and we both understand that there could be some short-term pain in order for some good long-term gain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to buy the bit about more pain coming to Sacramento.
