But, amid a string of injuries, that plan didn’t pan out. Lillard was waived by the Bucks last July after he suffered a torn Achilles and has since returned to Portland.

This season has been nightmarish for the Bucks, who are in 12th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 18-28. Earlier this month, Bucks fans booed the team at halftime when they were down 31 points against a Minnesota squad that was without Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. Antetokounmpo booed his fans back later in the game, a sad twist of fate for a superstar who went from being the darling of the league to exchanging barbs with his own supporters.

<img alt="Stephen Curry celebrates after making a three-pointer against the Milwaukee Bucks. Getty Images

Even though Antetokounmpo didn’t explicitly request a trade, the writing is on the wall for the organization and its superstar, with the team flailing and Antetokounmpo able to become a free agent the summer of 2027 if he declines his $62.8 million player option.

Now the question becomes will the Bucks pull the trigger ahead of the February 5 trade deadline or wait until June?

By waiting, they’d be able to see if other teams could offer appealing draft picks following the lottery. That, of course, would benefit everyone vying for Anteteokounmpo not named the Warriors.

But, if the Bucks decide to make a move now, this could change everything for Golden State.

<img alt="Giannis Antetokounmpo during warmups prior to the game against the Denver Nuggets. Without Butler, they’ve lost three of their last five games as Curry’s chances to win his fifth championship and play meaningful basketball have all but been extinguished, unless Golden State can pull off a miracle by Thursday.

If the Warriors were able to acquire Antetokounmpo, they’d instantly become title contenders.

<img alt="Giannis Antetokounmpo, right, and Denver Nuggets’ Zeke Nnaji battle for a loose ball. AP

Curry, Antetokounmpo and Draymond Green would be an incredibly tough trio to stop and it wouldn’t take much time for them to develop chemistry since they’re all vets with championship experience. So, the fact that Antetokounmpo is sidelined four-to-six weeks with a calf injury and isn’t expected to return until March wouldn’t preclude the Warriors from becoming a real threat this season.

As for the Bucks, they’d be able to begin focusing on their rebuild with a smattering of first-rounders.

Download The California Post App, follow us on social, and subscribe to our newsletters

California Post News: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, LinkedIn
California Post Sports Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X
California Post Opinion
California Post Newsletters: Sign up here!
California Post App: Download here!
Home delivery: Sign up here!Page Six Hollywood: Sign up here!

While it remains to be seen how the Bucks will play this, this is a potentially thrilling development for a Warriors team that has rescuciated itself in the past.

After Kevin Durant left in free agency in 2019, Klay Thompson suffered consecutive ACL and achilles injuries and the Warriors missed the playoffs in 2020 and 2021, the dynasty was thought to be done.
