{"id":575039,"date":"2026-02-01T12:06:49","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T12:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/575039\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T12:06:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T12:06:49","slug":"pistons-coach-has-no-doubt-about-two-way-guards-future-in-detroit-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/575039\/","title":{"rendered":"Pistons coach has \u2018no doubt\u2019 about two-way guard\u2019s future in Detroit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">One of the bigger surprises for the surging Detroit Pistons this season hasn\u2019t been that two-way guard Daniss Jenkins has proved to be a solid pick up after going undrafted in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s the fact that Jenkins has fully broken into the rotation of the first-place Pistons to become one of the top choices at point guard behind star Cade Cunningham.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Being on a two-way contract, Jenkins is limited to 50 active games with the Pistons before he would need to be put on a standard contract in order to be available for the rest of the season and for the postseason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The question has been looming what the Pistons will do with Jenkins, who has now used 47 of his games, but coach J.B. Bickerstaff is direct that he\u2019s not going anywhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe\u2019ll be available, there\u2019s no doubt about that,\u201d Bickerstaff said after <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/cunningham-pistons-notch-first-win-060410171.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Detroit\u2019s 131-134 win over Golden State on Friday;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Detroit\u2019s 131-134 win over Golden State on Friday<\/a>. \u201cObviously, those are (president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon) final decisions and how they work that out, but I think he\u2019s earned a spot on this roster, and he\u2019s proven that he can help us win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHim being out there allows us to have a ball handler out there and put Cade in different spots, his ability to defend multiple positions, and make shots. It\u2019s a good fit, and it just adds to the versatility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jenkins, 24, showed flashes of his talent during NBA Summer League and certainly figured to have more than his seven games of experience last year as a rookie two-way option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But early injuries to the lineup resulted in Jenkins taking on a major role less than a month into the season. He had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/pistons\/2025\/11\/three-words-from-pistons-star-motivated-two-way-players-breakout-performance.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:breakout 24-point performance off the bench;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">breakout 24-point performance off the bench<\/a> in an overtime win over the Washington Wizards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Two nights later, Jenkins made his first career start and posted 18 points and 12 assists in 30 minutes to help the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/pistons\/2025\/11\/no-cade-no-duren-no-problem-depleted-pistons-beat-bulls-for-8th-straight-win.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Pistons beat the Chicago Bulls;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Pistons beat the Chicago Bulls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He\u2019s seen fluctuation in his minutes as the team got healthier and as Bickerstaff started tinkering with the rotation. But January has seen him solidify his place as both an energy player to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/growing-confidence-within-pistons-bench-163012988.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:lead the second unit off the bench;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lead the second unit off the bench<\/a> and sometimes a partner for Cunningham in the backcourt.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">For the month, Jenkins averaged 9.4 points, 4.9 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 44% from beyond the arc in just over 20 minutes per game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jenkins isn\u2019t immune to the struggles of his first true season in the NBA. He had one of his worst shooting performances with a recent 0-for-8 effort against the Denver Nuggets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But he plays with the type of passion on both ends of the court that fits Bickerstaff\u2019s style perfectly and have placed him on the verge of signing his first standard contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFor me, this was my goal. Being undrafted, you obviously wanna work and get that first contract, get to that standard contract just to show that,\u201d Jenkins said after scoring 12 points in Friday\u2019s game. \u201cI\u2019ve been saying that I belong in this league, a long time ago when I did my first Summer League, and I knew it\u2019d come true. I just needed an opportunity, and that\u2019s what this organization gave me, so I\u2019m just looking forward to the day.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat\u2019s a big goal for me, a big accomplishment, so I\u2019m just excited to see what happens. I feel like I\u2019ma be around here for the rest of the year for sure, so we\u2019ll see when that thing comes. I\u2019m happy and I\u2019m blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In order for the former St. John\u2019s guard to join the 15-man roster, the Pistons will have to make some tough decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Detroit will either need to waive a current player or make a trade \u2014 with the upcoming Feb. 5 trade deadline coinciding with Jenkins\u2019 50th game \u2014 to open up a spot for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A likely candidate for the Pistons to waive would be forward Isaac Jones, who has played just one game for Detroit and spent most of the season with their G League Motor City Cruise.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Even if Jones is waived, there\u2019s a strong chance the Pistons could bring him right back on a two-way contract, taking Jenkins\u2019 spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With the trade deadline so close, there\u2019s no certainty yet how much the Pistons\u2019 roster might change by the end of the week.
